Pachter Says PSP GO! 'Ripping Off' Gamers >
2009/06/11 16:56:13: Posted by DM
The outspoken game analyst Michael Pachter has come out to claim that Sony is "ripping off" gamers by charging $249.99 for the PSP GO! Even though this was the price for the original fat PSP, it seems that a newer, smaller, sexier, more technologically advanced device, should be cheaper. Pachter says, anyway. He claims the new device does not cost as much to make as the Slim PSP-3000. That may be, but it is new, and it is Sony, what did he expect?

what do ya mean by "its sony"?

He's just making a friendly fanboy gesture.

But anyway this price seems a bit steep for me. I'm not really much of a portable gamer anyway. I bought a ds lite when they came out and gave it away later on.

DM's flamebaiting comments aside, I will say that anyone who thinks the Wii is a rip off is a hypocrite for not believing the same with the PSPgo.

It's the PSP tech, with a slide screen, and internal storage instead of a UMD drive. That's basically it. It's the Wii version of handhelds and I was shocked by how much it was.

Wow, taking a stab at me or something?

WTF no. You never even said anything about the PSPgo IIRC, it was just a general statement. I've never disagreed that the Wii is a bit expensive for the tech inside the box, but I've always justified the price with the great games that are on it to play.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for the PSPgo when all the games should still be playable on the cheaper PSP models.

Man people here are far too defensive and tense. =p If you did say anything about the PSPgo, I really don't remember. I like the look of it, but the price is too much for something that has a smaller screen, lacks touch screen, a second analog nub, or more power.

UK, June 12, 2009 - Michael Pachter has expressed regret for branding the PSP go as a rip-off earlier this week.

The industry analyst was particularly outspoken about the handheld's price point, saying that "$249 is too much. Period," in an interview with Geoff Keighley.

'I sincerely regret the choice of words,' Pachter said in a statement on Industry Gamers. 'I do NOT think that Sony is doing anything nefarious in choosing their pricing strategy... They are pricing at a point that positions the PSP Go competitively with the iPod Touch, and the PSP Go arguably has much more value than the Apple product.'

The retraction was made while Kaz Hirai crushed Pachter's particulars in a vice, a fact that we have just made up.

just seen that on ign a statement from the dood

I think "ripping off" is a poor choice of words for a professional, but overpriced certainly is not.

the way i see it is how much i make in work usually 180-250 euro a week depending on how many hours i get.

it would be nice if it was cheaper. i could get an older model psp from work for much cheaper but im entitled to DISCOUNT so that solves that problem ill prolly get €25-€35 knocked off teh price

so its a WIN for me

This would depend on what is bundled in with the GO. Will there be games/applications already downloaded on it? Perhaps if every GO came with little big planet or some other strong game already on it, the price may be worth it. The comparison to an ipod touch is interesting though... but no one said those damn things are not overpriced as it is.

It would be as if i said a Lexus is reasonably priced because its close to a Mercedes. That doesn't mean it is affordable.

I thought a 16GB Iphone was priced at $200 now, is it not?

If this is the case then that would mean the Iphone, which is more powerful and supported, is a better deal than the PSPgo which lacks a touch screen and phone funtion. On the PSPgo's side though, it does have the input methods that the Iphone sorely lacks IMO.

I still believe there isn't any good reason for launching the PSPgo at such a high price. The only logical reason I can figure is that the older PSP models are not at a point where they can drop the price yet and remain profitable. So they up the price of the PSPgo to make it seem like it's some new piece of hardware, when in reality it's not.

I just can't believe 16GB of memory is any more expensive than including a disc drive. Sony also saves money on the smaller screen and probably a smaller batter since there won't be a disc drive to sap all the power.
