Ballmer Says Xbox Will Capitalize On PS3's Delay >
2006/03/17 10:29:33: Posted by DM
Speaking to CNN Money, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that since the PS3 now will not launch until November, the XBox360 is in a better position to become the number one gaming console. He says that in the past, the first company to sell 10 million units became the market leader.

In every other generation, the first guy to 10 million consoles was the number one seller in the generation," Ballmer told FORTUNE in an interview on Thursday afternoon. "Did we just get an even better opportunity to be the first guy to 10 million? Yeah, of course we did.

Come on. 10 Million. Maybe half of that by november and were talking. Don't get me wrong. I had the xbox360 from the beginning, waited online at midnite here in new york in the rain at Software ETC on 34th street feeling sick.Have purchase many games. Regular and Arcade Live. But to believe with the shortage we had that Microsoft will capitalize on the situation with 10 Million systems by november seems far fetch. Leave the lying for Sony. I have to much respect for you (Microsoft) to see you stoop down to Sony's level.

I hope they dont expect to sell much systems in Japan, because they are not buying it.

since it looks like they are going to make their 5-5.5 million units sold goal for june, why is it so hard to believe they can sell another 5 million before the end of the year? especially with them building the third factory, i see it entirely possible for them to reach that goal and so do most analysts (which really are hardly ever right to be honest). also i dont think he is saying that they will sell 10 million by the time the ps3 hits, only that they will hit 10 million units first, which is the important part. Peter Moore said this same thing a long time ago (at the X05 even i believe) where the first player to reach 10 million units sold has always kept the lead, by any margin. although it pains me to think that sony will still come out on top even with the delay (so many mindless sony zombies) i dont think the gap between systems sold will be worth even looking at. IMHO, all 3 of the next gen systems will enjoy a very healthy market share.

Kenny K. You maybe Right, I really didn't mean they can't do it. But with the japanese market shooting us down so much and the American market being loyal to Sony. It's going to be a hard thing to do. I don't know why things are the way they are. But every time America does something good its hard for other countries (except for Europe) To support us. We are very disliked in the world. So the closer Sony gets to its goal the less people are going to be buying 360. Thats why I made the commet for november.

10 Million by Nov. If they can supply it, it might be possible.

well, jaoanese people are trained not to buy goods outside of there country they are loyal only to there

manufacturer. there beleifs are that if it is not jap

its no good...majority of american household have jap products in it(sony) they think there the greatest company in electronics in the freakin world...japanese

people will wait an extra year for a ps3 if they have to and will not think about a xbox360 at all it's in there culture.

We just bought a Japanese Car. Can you blame us North America makes crappy cars that break down.
Written by Ric Hard on 2006/03/17
What a car has to do with a system. The xbox360 is a good system and Sony had many break downs with the PS & PS2 Your comment is irrelevant.

By april people will be able to walk into a store and get 360s microsoft says even analyst expect microsoft to hit 10-12 million by the end of this year. Microsoft will be at around 4.7 mil by the end of june and E3 will cause an even bigger rise in 360 sales they'll make that 10 million i'm sure of it.

"We're sort-of on track," he says, "though it would've been nice at Christmas to have one for everyone who wanted one." For Christmas? I still can't even get one now....

MS will hit 10 million easily when Halo 3 comes out. It will continue to maintain this lead as long as the quality of the games matches the games on PS3.

Too human and blue dragon are BOTH coming before christmas and they are basically around the same time as ps3's launch those games will sell 360s ;)

I dont think any 2 games will sell the xbox360 in Japan. Japan is too loyal to their own companies and dont care for Microsoft or their machine.

Serious if doa4 did not help much, I dont think 1 rpg will either.
Written by GP (1) on 2006/03/17
Noone said that they will sell 10 million units by the time the PS3 is released, just that the first one to reach that number will be the market leader by the end of it all. And the fact that the 360 was released earlier will help them keep up the lead. I'm pretty sure that's what they meant.

BTW has anyone seen the Bioshock images in the game informer mag?(I think thats the mag I was looking at)it looks awsome! From the makers of system shock I have a feeling this game will rock.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/03/17
doa 4 is a good game yes, but comparable to blue dragon in terms how big its going to be? No way... blue dragon is a game from the man all of japan voted most representative of the 2005 gaming industry. So I think they'll MORE than show his games some love.

The problem with precedents is that they were made to be broken. Microsoft may reach 10 million first, but that doesn't mean jack...they'll still be 2nd place by the end of this next generation!
Written by optaviusx on 2006/03/18
I wouldn't be so sure of that kagai... the xbox not only came out a year later than the ps2 there were VERY few top tier games besides the usual halo, halo 2 ninja gaiden and couple others, but the list is nowhere nearly as impressive as the 360's is currently. Now the original xbox sold like 24+ million units throughout its entire lifespan and the 360 is on track to meet half of that by the end of this year what does that tell you?

Yes the ps2 sold over 100 million+, but the 360 is currently on track to sell faster than even the ps2 at this pace IF microsoft reaches that 12 million mark by the end of this year it'll be tough for the ps3 to catch up. Sony expects to have 6 million by march 2007 that wont happen there are always supply issues. Both consoles will be successful though.

What we must realize is most of sony's installed base isn't full of people that are automatically going to buy sony's next console simply because they owned the ps2. Most of the ps2's unit sales were because people felt hey it has better games might as well get it. This time around microsoft's console will have the game lineup for it to compete evenly. I'm factored into sony's installed base as well since I bought a ps2 like many other people, but the same thing applys to many current 360 owners we bought a 360 because the future looks good for the console and there are tons of amazing games to look forward to.

So it isn't as simple as looking at sony's ps2 installed base of over 100 million and the xbox's of live over 24 million and immediately assume that same 100 million will be going to the ps3. It will be determind by the games, what goes on at E3 etc. The 360's japanese developer support is looking strong and it'll get better at E3 when square announces multi platform support with next final fantasy and dragon quest. Others will support the 360 as well like john carmack of ID as well as many others.
Written by silverwolf on 2006/03/18
People need to stop looking at Sony's past install base while important it's not representative of this current gen console. Why you ask? Because many like myself who where in the PS2 install base jumped ship, that's why!
