Inside The PS3's OS >

According to this post on PS3Portal, the PS3 is set to use up much more in the way of system resources than the Xbox360 does with its operating system. We are not sure how much these guys actually know, but check it out just the same. (Thanks, Optaviusx)

I knew optviusx would have found this . He's pretty good with the xbox360 info. I saw this info earlier on a xbox360 forum and they claim the xbox360 only use 4% hardware resources to run the OS while the PS3 uses 25% of the resources.

25%??? DAMN!

That's way too cumbersome.

Before all you anti-PS3 go celebrate, keep in mind that this is by NO means official or final.

- 1 SPE of 7 constantly reserved

- 1 SPE of 7 able to be "taken" by the OS at a moments notice (games have to give it up if requested)

That means only 1 SPE will be reserved. Another MAY be taken by the OS to do multiple video-chat streams etc. I doubt anybody would want to do video chat while playing the game. It's not that big of a deal.

Interesting how bad news manage to get a rating of 8.0 XD

This by no means makes the ps3 bad in anyway its just both are very different consoles and keep in mind microsoft is a software company first and foremost so obviously they would've done everything in their power to make sure the os would require as little of the system's power as humanely possible.

Or another thing that could contribute to it is the fact that the spe isn't as robust as the ppe on the cell (which would do a much better job of handling the os due to the core being more capable) but putting the os on the ppe isn't an option because ps3 devs need that for things such as game control, ai and scripting since the spe doesn't handle those too well. Also Microsoft's constant pushing of how important such a service is could've probably been bait to get sony to attempt to emulate xbox live. Keep in mind microsoft worked on xbox live for 4 years before the original xbox released there is alot of work that goes into such a service.

Who knows for all we know when Microsoft originally tried xbox live it might've used 40% or more of the resources until optimizations were done. The os was custom built by microsoft (they are a great sofware company so thats good news) Alot of people think its simply windows 2000, but its a custom built os from the ground up which will allow them to make additions later on (vista related no doubt)

Just thought it was kind of funny how the article states that Sony may be doing the blade thing as well. Hopefully they won't, the blades are nice on the 360, but I would rather have Sony use an original idea of their own instead. Directly ripping off something like the way a console GUI looks / behaves is lame.

The OS is definitely too bulky - if the info is real they'll certainly need to make more optimisations. The possible slim power advantage the PS3 might have (who knows, probably not even Sony) will be further lost if the OS takes too much away from games on top of a not so brilliant SDK.

Optaviusx:

The 360 will require vista related updates as it doesn't currently work as a media centre extender with vista (atleast not for me with build 5342).

That means the PS3 is left with a total of 416MB to use. While the Xbox 360 has 480MB left, that's a complete 64MB that could be used for textures and so on. The CPU on the Xbox 360 is a general purpose CPU, when this was said about the Xbox 360 CPU many criticized it, well I guess now you know why MS choose a general purpose cpu since they where planning on running software on the background. And general purpose CPU’s are made for that. So if my calculations are correct the Xbox 360 CPU will be left at 3.1Ghz (with everything running in the background) and the PS3’s cell will be left at 2.7Ghz. Ouch, that’s a lot of resources but then again nothings final so this can change. If I'm wrong please feel free to correct me I really want to know the correct numbers.

there is a lot of misunderstanding on the OS deal.

it has been reported that 2%-3% of cores 2 and 3 are used for the OS and dashboard. so think of it as one 3.2 ghz CPU and two 3.1 ghz CPUs for gaming.

as for the ps3, one SPE is deactivated and redundent to improve chip yeilds and one of the remaining 7 SPEs is used entirely for the OS. so devs have the PPU and 6 SPEs for gaming. i dont even think devs have an option to use the 7th SPE when the OS isnt using it because the OS will be running in the background and interupting a command for the OS may effect aspects of game performance too much.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/04/13

Devs have no option for the 7th spe its completely reserved for the OS, people on ps3portal forums have no idea what they are talking about. One of the morons even went as far as to say the ps3's 30% more powerful than the 360? What in god's name are they smoking.. If thats how much of the ps3's power that os uses then so be it if they truly want to copy xbox live then the os will always have to be running in the background there is no disabling it.

To be honest being able to put your own music on ANY game without getting rid of the game's original sound effects is something I like. Just kick back mess with some geometry wars, elder scrolls or any other game i please with my own music ;)

DAMN...THATS EVEN WORST THAN MY PC GAMES WITH 2 GIGS OF RAM
Written by silverwolf on 2006/04/16

Regardless of how much is taken from the cell. It's the amount of ram that I believe is the worst part all!

Aren't they the same people who claimed that ps2 can't do 480p due to limited Vram? yeah... they sure know it all, peeps with dev kits and program via C++ (watch for the pun there you assembly fuckheads),

ya know like 360, they will probably find a workaround to that thing that is so mention as a problem... you see how emebedded os can effect games, even with 360's small load, it certainly does fuck up alot of things (Dead or Alive 4 comes to mind, even with patches), however developers will find a work around, especially to this thing with ps3 (note the internal work around, ya know the guys who get paid alot to discover shit for the dev community, rather than lame fucks who still think C++ is the most efficient language because their college professor told them so)
Written by optaviusx on 2006/04/18

What exactly is wrong with Dead or Alive 4 unknown? I hope you know the game is perfectly fine. Itagaki is a big fan of his work and plays online regularly and makes adjustments to the gameplay as he sees fit (thats what most of the patches were for) Changing the strength of a certain move, changing the command for certain moves, Most doa 4 updates were all about balancing gameplay again there is nothing wrong with doa 4.

Also the amount of power used for the ps3 os is by no means a permanent thing if the usage is indeed accurate that doesn't mean it will remain that way. Future updates could improve the usage drastically or only by a bit or it could make it worse or the situation could be the same. C++ isn't a bad language and alot of coders seem to like using it whenever possible, but the type of ocnsole the ps3 is according to heavenly sword developer isn't a good option for the architecture as fancy as c++ may be.

The problem with people learning c++ and thinking its the be all end all for coding is that they don't become as well rounded as they should be. They should become familiar with other languages as well, but most professors do teach C++ extensively, but its still an amazing language.
