Playstation 3 Price Not To Be Revealed At E3? >
2006/04/25 16:19:25: Posted by DM
According to CNN, which as we all know is the ultimate source of video game info, Sony will not be revealing the Playstation 3's price point until the end of Summer at the earliest. They claim this is clever marketing. We say it is Sony being Sony.

One detail that won't be revealed is the PS3's price, which is bound to cause frustration amongst gamers, but is actually a savvy media move. By withholding those details, Sony gains additional media attention (and a renewed burst of public awareness) when it ultimately reveals the price - likely at the end of summer or early fall.

ok,ive heard of the phrase:'Theres no bad publicity', but theres a point were you dont get away with it anymore.

And Sony sure is trying to approach that point as close as they possibly can!

I guess November is a far place...

That'll do wonders for preorders won't it. lol

Hmmm, I'm thinking that Sony are either hoping that people will preorder before hearing the inevitable high price, or, that they're putting off the inevitable bad news so as to protect their share price for as long as possible.

Why should they even tell the price at this point? The release is six months away. I don't quite remember when they revealed Xbox 360's price, but it wasn't E3 last year. There's still the Tokyo Game Show, if they won't reveal the price there, I'll be worried.

Well,i want to get my preorder in as soon as possible and id like to know exactly how much its going to cost me.

They are doing a world wide release and if you look at the anticipation of this console, preorder is no luxeury.

'Luxury',that is.

Frankly some of you need to give it a rest. Why do people expect sony to give the price of the ps3 so early is beyond me. What benefit can it possible be for sony to do so? If sony announce the ps3 price now it will create a nightmare situation for the company. They are basically working with the same window that microsoft worked with last year and the last time I checked microsoft did that revealed the 360 price and the two sku's till the end of summer. I expect the same patern with sony. Think about it people, why in the world would sony give its competitions such a big advantage? The product launch is six months away people it makes no sense to come out now and reveal the price. From sony's standpoint it would put them at a disadvantage.

This is crazy. Most likely after the E3 show people will be able to put down payment on the system. What sense does it make to put a down payment if you don't know the price. Now if you don't put a down payment early and wait till summer there maybe a shortage and stores may stop taking pre-orders period. I think Sony is retarded when it comes to PS3. It seems they have everything all F*CKED UP.

YOu guys just don't understand do you? Like toukale said, launch is half a year away. Why would they want to announce the projected price now? They haven't even started manufacturing PS3s and you want a price? It's a smart move by Sony to NOT reveal price until near launch. Then they can suprise us with a lower than expected launch price.
Written by silverwolf on 2006/04/25

Or higher than expected! It can go either way.

Well if they reveal price now in spring people might be turned off by it and decide to get a 360, or people will say I can afford to buy a 360 now and save up the XXX.XX amount of money needed for PS3 later on.

I started paying my preorder for the xbox 360 before, the price had been announced or the two skus had been revealed, so I dont think not revealing the price will hurt Sony, there are plenty of dedicated gamers that a willing to pay it off over a few months time. I remember taking paying my xbox 360 off $50 at a time.

I definetly don't see the ps3 selling for anything less than $520 or so $480 being the ABSOLUTE cheapest they could go. Rightfully the ps3 should cost $600+ due to sony's financial situation. Sure the playstation business has been awesome, but the rest has been less than spectacular and it has hurt sony.

Either way sony is going to have to come to this E3 with some nice gameplay footage to show off, because alot of things the 360 will be showing off this E3 like Too Human, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Lost Planet, Blue Dragon and other things will shine through actual gameplay sony needs to do the same type of convincing.

The big problem for sony is that the ps3 is going to be popular.. what do I mean? Rumors from some japanese publications are already suggesting the ps3 wont make the november launch and if it does it wont be a worldwide launch.

That isn't whats important though, what is important is that regardless of what type of launch sony does there will be shortages with titles like gears of war, mass effect, too human, lost planet, blue dragon all due october-november this year will be there to take advantage.

Hello. I hope they do reveal a price @ E3. Toukale - Sony shouldn't follow (copy) M$ ways of doing anything, THey are their own company & should do things thier way. We all knew that the x360 wasn't going to be $500 on launch day.

Even M$ said that the xbox360 wasn't going to be too expensive, yet Sony stated that the PS3 is going to be expensive.

I think the reason for not announcing the price is M$. They (M$) can come in & undercut the X360 from $50-$100USD. I Think they will anyway.

If Sony doesn't have enough PS3s to sell or even launch in said Time (November)in the USA, M$ will surely get a foothold on the console market in this country.
Written by Da Man (152) on 2006/04/26

You have to remember that PS2 was something like $299 when it launched, so maybe PS3 will be expensive compared to PS2's launch price, not that expensive in genereal. So more than $600 is too much, likely it will be a little less than 500$, which isn't much from a device like PS3.

optaviusx, I haven't heard any rumours about PS3 not making it to November launch. They're starting to manufacture the consoles in a month or two, the dev kits are almost the final versions already (the final ones being ready & shipped to developers in June) and games are surely starting to be at their final steps of development (Warhawk looked like it's the real deal already, just six months of polishing to do).

I feel MS is going to cut the price regardless. As for Sony not revealing their price early because of the competition with MS is not going to make a difference. If somebody can't afford Sony's PS3 because of the price of the system or they feel it's not worth the price they're not going to buy it anyway. If they went and said the price of the PS3 is going to be around $399, no matter how early they announced it people will line up to buy it. But if they go and say the price is anywhere near $599 to $799 I don't care how much I put down that money will get transferred to something else. I even heard a 1UP podcast that people aren't even standing online for the PS3. So Sony better change their approach on the PS3 all together or become a memory.

Keep Em guessing and Keep em on there toes

Let look at ther whole consumer base, PS3 is a myth to most consumers and know very little about it with little or no advertising to get mass attention or awareness, so lets not forget that.

When the PS3 releases in November its bound to sell, and you know that...its only the Loyal or hardcore fans are the ones eager to know about this price release....aswell as MS...sooner they know sooner they can start thinking about price cuts. You get what I mean.

Lets try and look at the bigger picture rather than trying to narrow in and paint the doomsday scenarios.

MS is going to wave it's hand and drop the price at a moment's notice. They really got a pretty cushy position by launching first and most people are underestimating how savvy they are after their first outing. MS is successful for a reason.

And, by the way, it's spelled "MS", not "M$" you commie.
Written by silverwolf on 2006/04/26

By the time the PS3 come out MS will be celebrating it's 1st year with a price drop. Hell they're already have plans for a smaller CPU. These are the types of advantages you have when you come out first!
