Lol, Devil May Cry will be released in Europe for the PS2 in September. I guess Xbox fans are desperate for some Devil May Cry love. XD

yes jon we do, and i cant blame them, sony current consoles have been fairly good, but the ps3 has taken all the steps in the wrong direction. sony fans may hype it or not, but they know $600, or £425 is well too much, even if there comments are like "yeah u 2 cheap to afford ps3, but the rest of us r not!"

The truth is ms can win this round, they really can, but are they doing whats needed nowto silence the sony crowd, and more importantly grab casual gamers, im not convinced yet.

The G, it's funny how everybody is only talking about the 600$ PS3, when there is almost equally good PS3 for 500$ (there is nothing you can do with the 600$ package you couldn't do with the 500$ one). 500$ is still kinda expensive, but it's _only_ 100$ more than Xbox 360, and it has free online gaming and a HD player out of the box (I really think Xbox Live's cost should be taken into consideration when thinking how much Xbox 360 costs, Online IS a big part of the console).

Maybe you don't need a Bluray player right away, but it has other benefits, like Region free games (this is really the only thing I hope Sony doesn't turn back its words on, region free games would make it worth every extra dollar) and multiple VA choices (no more horrible English VAs if the Japanese ones are better).

Da Man, no HDMI is a deal breaker for me. $500 is a lot of money for a HD movie player that might not play any given movie in hd. I don't read or speak japanese, region free games don't hold a lot of intrest for me.

Yes overall the ps3 is better priced, but the thing is not all of us want these features and they should not make them standard to begin with.

A bluray player may be nice, but if i dont want it i must have it, so im paying for features i dont want, but im bieng told its a good deal..........the point is that $500 version, is simply a way to selly you a REAL ps3, bit by bit.

my main problem with sony is the bluray player. Bluray is not needed for games and is the main reasion why the machine costs too much. Even if blu ray won the battle, i can never see it winning the war (as in blu ray will never establish itself as a medium, even if it beats hd dvd)

your right about the £500, especially since in effect it only ever loses hdmi support, but the price is still high, and because i live in the uk, the price in proprtion to the exchange rate is simply riduclous.

Not surprise here, I have read some time ago about Capcom releasing a PC Devil May Cry and DMC3SE looks like a good deal for everybody. M$ gets some DMC love and Sony keeps DMC4 exclusivity.

See you.

Did someone seriously say there is nothing you can do with the $600 ps3 that you can't do with the $500 one? No wireless controller support... no hdmi? People all of a sudden are saying hdmi is no big deal, but this hdmi is what sony fans and sony themselves have been bragging about for so long so there is no excuse for any version of the ps3 not to have it.

I mean the console will run someone like $680 easy even if you only want 1 game... Thats just ridiculous I'll buy a ps3 no doubt about it, but I'll wait for the price drop.
Written by - The G- on 2006/05/20

err opta, sony has said that you can get all those things later EXCEPT for hdmi, and wireless bluetooth controllers come standard for 500 dollars version.

i wouldpost a link but you know? so go check joystiq, its s respected site
Written by RastaDator (91) on 2006/05/20

optaviusx: It is clear that most PS3 fans will buy the 600$ version because hdmi even if they have a non-hdmi TV. But it is true too that 500$ PS3 is comparable to x360 premium version, and additionally an "unwanted" feature like BR playability comes almost for free.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/20

The problem is guys that once icp goes into effect which will be a year or 2 into blu ray's life ALL $500 ps3's without HDMI will not be able to play a movie a blu ray movie 1080p. It wont even play in 720P.. it will be downscaled to 540p (which isn't even a hi def resolution)

Why then bother with a $500 playstation thinking you are getting away with a br playability when in reality you'll have to watch all blu ray movies at 540p? Sony made a major mistake with that $500 version. Sure you can add that stuff for wireless functionality, but why should you have to? The only good thing is that a hard drive is standard on all models.

You make a good point Rasta, but man they will be screwing alot of people with that lesser version and many probably wont know. The biggest problem for sony is EVERYONE will want a ps3 of course, but due to price trust me when I say not everyone will be able to get one. You'll have people who had intentions of getting a ps3 and will end up leaving the store with a 360 because they'll soon realize to get an extra controller, atleast 2 games, accessories they are spending easily $780 possibly $800.

The dirty thing about it is they are just sneaking blu ray drives in there to win the format war, but they're going to have an incredibly tough time doing that considering the price of stand alone drives and the fact that sony is destined to have manufacturing issues later this year.

I'm practically calling it ps3's wont be as high in supply later on this year as sony says they will be. They will start coming into supply around february to march of next year.
Written by RastaDator (91) on 2006/05/20

I am almost sure movie industry will have to drop all these restrictions because they produce more harm than good. Sony (and some others) said that they will not apply all that bullshit about downscaling I hope more will follow eventually.

Written by Jon (70) on 2006/05/20

Sony actually said they won't use the ICT(downscaling) for the first couple years. After that they will apply it. And even if sony never applies it, I buy movies from lots of other studios.
Written by Sky (325) on 2006/05/20

why do people keep saying SONY is forcing blu ray players on consumers....blu ray's primary use on the ps3 is for games....not for movies....DVD9 is old news and optaviusx dont be too sure alot people wont be able to afford the ps3... when people were paying 1200 on ebay for the 360
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/20

Blu ray is being forced on consumers whether you want it or you don't want it the fact that its being forced on people doesn't change. Why is a blu ray drive inside the ps3? Because next gen games need the extra space??? Not at all :D Its because sony's other areas of business have been suffering and so they figured why not use their popular playstation brand to help establish blu ray.

Cell is yet something that is being forced on consumers, BUT that is actually good. I'm extremely glad beyond belief that sony is pushing cell sure sony has other motives for it, but cell is significant and will help the ps3 in a big way.

Blu ray on the otherhand isn't TRULY needed for games they are using it for that, but not because next gen games need more space that is actually nonsense. Blu ray is an attempt by sony to corner the dvd market and not as beneficial to games as they try to say. Cell on the otherhand can do wonders for games.

They wont enforce the ict for the first 2 years of blu ray TOPS after that everyone with a $500 ps3 can kiss 1080p playback goodbye. The only crucial thing about blu ray on the ps3 is the fact that ps3 games will be blu ray discs.

1080p playback will exist only for people that purchase the $600 ps3, but how many of those people will own a 1080p capable tv anyway? The good news is atleast they'll have 720p or 1080i playback. People with the $500 ps3 wont have those resolutions for blu ray playback.

PS3 is a fine value if you find the blu ray drive and the high def blu ray movies useful but definitely high as a pure gaming machine. Impact on the actual games will be minimal.

360 fans should keep an eye on hd dvd movies since they will be able to add that movie player cheaply this fall. The hd dvd movies are already out in the stores along with 1st few players so you can watch a demo and see what the quality is like.
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/20

HD-DVD has sold out completely in the usa and japan. Who knows maybe if the 360 actually came with hd-dvd built japan would be all over it lol :P

From what I can see so far they might be the market that truly eats up next gen dvd formats like blu ray. The ps3 when it all boils down to it is a good value when all things are considered, but when sony has competition out there that is just as powerful & cheaper there could be problems. Maybe Sony is hoping that with the higher price people assume that more expensive means better? Which happens to be the case with MANY people.
