Kutaragi Says PS3 Owners Wont Pay For Online Service >
2006/06/12 7:59:47: Posted by purbeast
According to GI, Sony lead man Ken Kutaragi recently spoke with Japanese website Watch about the Sony PS3 online service, among other things. He says that you just cannot charge for basic network matching services, the type of thing that is taken for granted on PC. We hope Sony sticks to this, as it would help reduce the overall PS3 cost.

yea, Sony might not charge to play "SONY" games but see if third party companies charge you to play on their server.

If it's like the PS2 online stuff it should be free. I would rather pay to get something like Live.

Nintendo has said the same thing. They won't make you pay from Nintendo's own online gaming, but they can't say for sure what the 3rd party will do. At the moment the DS doesn't have any fees, not even the 3rd party games.

PS2 had the same thing. Sony didn't make you pay for their own games, and neither did 99,9% of 3rd parties (I think that shitty Everquest MMORPG was the only game with monthly fees.

Hence I don't see any reason why most 3rd parties would make you pay. Of course MMORPGs are a whole different deal, those are never free (Guild Wars being the only free one, and even that isn't (IMO) a "true" MMORPG).

You pay to prevent hackers and cheaters from ruining your online experience.

Though I have paid for XBL, cheaters and hackers still ruin my online experience in Halo 2. I expect more for a charge service.

They are being very smart with their choice of words. "He says that you just cannot charge for basic network matching services, the type of thing that is taken for granted on PC."

They will charge for other more advanced things such as demos or behind the scenes videos mark my words.

Im almost skipped your post man, But thats what i was just going to get on to, "Basic networking service" is nothing like a XBL service.

This is just basic service just like xbox live silver, you will have to pay for online play and multi player sony just need to come with the truth and stop the bullssshiit talk.

If Sony does offer XBL Gold equivalent services for free (which I seriously doubt), it will definitely help put the PS3 in a better position. But then obviously MS will follow suit.

It basically says in the article that Sony is depending on the sale of downloadable content from their online plan and that is possible considering how popular it is to download stuff on Xbox live.
