GI spoke with Jamie MacDonald, VP of SCE Worldwide Studios Europe. He stated that he believes digital distribution will overtake discs within the next five years. Five years seems like a short time to us, that is within the PS3's lifetime. Could this mean BR games will be downloadable?

The system comes with a HD that has room for 1-3 BD downloaded games according to BD disc specs. Yet the future is downloading games, perhaps what they're saying the the future of gaming isn't these larger games but normal DVD or smaller sized games if so then why the need for BD? Would anyone want to download a 30G game?

The future of gaming is bluray, no wait downloads, no wait.....

Its really sad to see that a company with such a rich gaming history lacks any sense of direction with their cutting edge product. They shouldn't come out and contradict what their selling point is on their console, higher capacity media. If that's not important pull the drive from the system and sell it at a competitive price with DVD drive that exists now which reads faster.

We are barely reaching the Terabyte milestone in HDD's. There is no freakin way! For this to be true, Sony and MS will have to market add-on TB HDD's for their consoles in the next 5 years.

Not only that, cable modem is too slow for such an idea. Fiber-optic networks will have to make a debut to the general consumer before this happens.

I think something you should also consider is that compression technology will evolve in the next few years too.

It is one person's belief. I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Except for you Mr. Foley, you leave the children alone.

i dont think we'll be downloading anything but old school games on all 3 platforms this gen. What he is saying, and execs from microsoft has expressed this as well, is that the next round of consoles may not ship with any kind of disk drive to speak of.

as usual this comment has been taken out of context

Did someone say children?

I am not a fan of the idea that we will not have physical media in the future. What about taking a game to a friends house? What about renting? What about reselling a game that you don't like or have beaten? I dont know about you, but I like the physical media. I like the fact, when I buy something that expensive I can read the instruction manual and look at the back of the case. Plus to top it off, If the system breakes, I can go out and get another system and still have my games.

I don't like it and do not wish this to happen.

yes i understand! there is just something about owning software that is actually there. only able to download games for a console= me unhappy!

Good points mason and odins. I concur completely. However, MS is definitely getting people used to the idea, though only for old games at this point. But, with emulation possibilities and advancements in the future, there's no telling where this path will lead.

Mason , I make your words mine, theres no way i wish to downloads get over physical discs.

VaeVictus,

To me a game that is 10-25 years old is in a different catagory than a game that is 2 weeks old. I consider paying 5 bucks to download an old game fine like going to an arcade. If I was to loose 2 or 3 $5 games, (I wouldn't be happy) it wouldn't bother me all that much compared to lets say, 2-3 $60 games. I personally dont mind the current setup of downloading some of the "older" games for a few dollars, while pressing the disks for the new titles.

In another thought, I wouldn't object to having the option to download games OR buying them in the stores. That way if you wanted to guarentee that you get it on day one, you can just download it. If you want the physical media you can wait untill you find it in a store.

VaeVictus and MAKAVELI,

Thanks for the kind words.

Its kinda funny how SCEI already said they are using blu-Ray specifically to up to date storage technology for the PS3 and is not using it to hype up the future. As you can see, e-distribution is going to get a lot more popular as time goes by. I'm pretty sure MS wants games to be distributed through the internet as well, and it will be possible. Hopefully internet connections will be fast enough to download full games and HDDs that will be large enough to hold a couple of games.

to put up to date*

did not say they are using it to hype Blu-Ray*
