MS Says DirectX 11 Won't Have DX9/10 Style Discontinuity >
2008/07/22 16:29:03: Posted by DM
MS officially announced DirectX 11 at it's Gamefest developer conference, in case you missed it. It will be exclusive to Windows Vista, of course, and future Windows versions. This time around though, DX11 will be compatible with DX10 hardware. They promise there will not be anywhere near as much of a break as there was between DX9 and DX10. Hopefully MS holds true on this promise.

Microsoft had previously said that DirectX 11 will be the first of its kind to allow PC Graphics cards to include and make use of the incredibly efficient eDRAM technology that was first seen in the Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 truly is the most revolutionary piece of hardware that was ever released in terms of how far ahead of its time it was.

Consider these facts:

* Xbox 360 uses a custom GPU based on Unified Shader technology. PC Graphics cards didn't see technology like that until January of 2007!

* Xbox 360 uses multi-core CPU technology, which is what PCs are now based on. At the time Xbox 360 was released, PCs were only experimenting with dual-core CPUs, but the Xbox 360 made use of a tri-core CPU technology.

* eDRAM technology is used in the Xbox 360, but most developers have no idea how to take full advantage of it, because it is a brand new technology. Until games are released that take advantage of DirectX 11, it means the ONLY hardware that uses this form of technology is the Xbox 360.

It will be interesting to see how the Xbox 360 software benefits as a result of PC developers now having access to eDRAM technology.

Oh MY GOD! Krogan. WTF?!?! are you that obsessed with the 360? It Makes me Sick! to see your posts. Its ok to choose a console but dammnnn!!! you take it over board.

Oh a good note. Why even bother upgrading anymore. I'll just wait another 2 years until I update anything hardware related to my PC. I'm currently running AMD Quad Core somesh!t, with 4GB of Rams, somebullsh!t ATI card with 256mb with Dual Screen and HDMI output and HD Audio. I only use my pc for music, the net and casting pitcures of nude girls. (damn I love my job)

the 360 may have unified shaders, but it has, what, a dozen of them? i prefer my 320 (or 64x5, whatever the fuck that means). can't argue against 800 (or 160x5), either. and thank you for your recitation Microsoft Product Brochure. i'll also let you argue with the Wikipedia nerds that the 360's GPU is any more than DX9.0c.
