First M.A.G. PS3 Screen & Info >
2008/07/23 2:27:02: Posted by DM
The one semi-promising title announced at the Sony pres conference was M.A.G. for the PS3. This "massive action game," being developed by Zipper, promises 256 player battles, with bombs, vehicles, and more. Well, the first screenshot of this game has been released (click read more to see it), and the PS3 official blog has some of the first concrete info.

The game is an action shooter at its core, you can run and gun, drive, and throw grenades, like most other games in the genre. SOCOM was a big inspiration for this game, it seems. Think just a huge, 256-player SOCOM match, and you have a rough idea of M.A.G.

I'm very interested in this game. I have a feeling the number of players M.A.G is gonna support will drop before it's release though. I'd love to know how Zipper thinks their gonna support 256 players online when current games with 16 players online lag regularly ? I'm not saying it's impossible, i'm just saying if we go by top games like COD4/Halo 3 it seems unlikely. It almost has to be server based to even think about supporting this many players. It will be EPIC if Zipper pulls this many players online off.

Hopefully the gameplay is great because i'm a little scared that this game might just be a number for Sony to tout. I can already see Sony bragging... We have 256 players online...The most on any console. Who cares if the gameplay sucks ? The PS3 has 256 players online...lol. Wait B3yond....

Well its definetly going to have to be server based. Not sure how 256 players per game is going to work out. As usual the word wait is associated with another PS3 game. So I guess we will have to "wait" to hear more about this game.

BTW if Tekken 6 comes to the 360 along with FF13 there is absolutely no reason for me to own a PS3 this generation unless I want a Blu-Ray player.

Zipper has had to create a brand new server architecture for a game like this to be possible. If ANYONE can make this happen it's Zipper!

Has Zipper worked on anything previously? Why "if anyone can make this happen it's Zipper"?

Zipper was responsible for the greatest online shooter of the last generation...The Socom Series. This game made 'online capabilites' a standard when most games were just worried about a single player experience. Heck, i knew people that got 'The Internet', just to play socom. They didn't even own a computer.

I think it's possible if they can provide the server for the game...

with 256 players, how long do we have to wait for al of them to come online...?

Maybe they will be a countdown or if anyone doesn't come online can lose points likein starcraft !

If D/C or Delay then each player lose points,

So taht might work...

I believe that this game is possible, but I would be worried about keeping up with the game play. The human has enough trouble keeping track of 8-16 things on screen at once.

256 players would you get to move at least 5 feet in the game without getting shot and having to restart every 10 to 15 seconds? Not all good ideas you should make reality, for example hanging on to every word that Sony says sounds like a good Idea..well you guys know the rest... :)

M.A.G. is currently being tested, and it is running into very difficult problems. In fact, the testers of the game actually refer to it as L.A.G.

Even if you could technically get a PS3 online service to avoid Internet L.A.G., you would still experience L.A.G. in two other forms:

(1) The framerate problems that most PS3 games are known for.

(2) You could wait an eternity and never see 256 players logged on to the crappy Playstation Network at the same time playing the same game...that would NEVER happen!

Correction for the above: I meant to say the HUMAN EYE.

That is 100% FUD krogan. I thought you were better than that. I would normally say..nice try, but that was pitiful.

I think the keyword is "up" to 256 players. More than likely the matches probably wouldn't get that big. It would also probably have to be made up of sub-teams of 8 or 16 to reach the higher numbers. How would you communicate with that many people unless it was a bunch of smaller teams making up one giant team?

What would be cool is if someone could act as a General or something and control the game RTS style barking orders to all sub-group leaders who in turn have to obey his orders, or not. The ensuing mutinies could be entertainment in and of itself.

@Ultrabiased Electronics Scholar

the game was announced to have 256 players with squads of 8 players. in theory, 32 teams of 8.

L.A.G.

That SERIOUSLY is the name that the people testing software have given to M.A.G.

In fact, one person specifically told me, "We didn't 'give' M.A.G. anything; it disappointed a lot of us and 'earned' the name of L.A.G. with all of the online lag that we have to put up with."
