FOSTER CITY, Calif., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer
Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced plans to introduce a new 160GB
PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system in North America as
part of the limited-edition Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM) PS3 system
bundle. The increased storage size enables entertainment enthusiasts to
store even more movies, television shows, and games downloaded from
PLAYSTATION(R)Network, as well as more videos, music, and photos from their
personal collection. Slated to launch in November for $499.99 (MSRP), the
160GB PS3 system will come bundled with the hit game, Uncharted: Drake's
Fortune(TM), a PLAYSTATION Network voucher for PAIN, and a DUALSHOCK(R)3
wireless controller. The previously announced 80GB PS3 system ($399.99
MSRP) has started shipping to retailers.

"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched
video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding
more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA.
"Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital
media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard
drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a
compelling bundle that delivers significant value."

The Uncharted: Drake's Fortune PS3 bundle includes the following
components:

-- 160GB PS3 system -- The 160GB PS3 is a complete entertainment system
comprising a Blu-ray(TM) Disc player, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi
connection, and Cell Broadband Engine(TM).

-- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune -- A 400-year-old clue found in the
coffin of Sir Francis Drake sets a modern-day fortune hunter, Nathan Drake,
on an exploration for the fabled treasure of El Dorado, leading to the
discovery of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The
search turns deadly when Drake becomes stranded on the island and hunted by
mercenaries. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake and his companions must fight
to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the
Island.

-- PAIN PLAYSTATION Network Voucher* -- PAIN boldly tackles a rarely
explored area of video-gaming ... comedy. The unique mechanic of the game
allows the player to load a character into a human-sized, ultra-powerful
slingshot, and fire the character into an active, physics-controlled
environment, filled with precarious and humorous situations. Download PAIN
from PLAYSTATION Store (http://store.playstation.com) to your PS3 system
with the included voucher.

-- DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller -- DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller
provides the most intuitive game play experience with pressure sensors in
each action button and the inclusion of the highly sensitive SIXAXIS(TM)
motion sensing technology.

The additional storage space of the 160GB model will benefit consumers,
as several highly anticipated PLAYSTATION Network and PS3 games along with
add-on content will be available for download soon, including PAIN
Amusement Park, Ratchet & Clank(R)Future: Quest for Booty(TM), SOCOM: U.S.
Navy SEALs Confrontation, and The Last Guy(TM). The bundle is also a great
option for consumers who want to utilize PLAYSTATION Network's video
delivery service, which offers new blockbuster movies and popular TV shows
for download on an ongoing basis.

PS3 momentum has soared in 2008, starting with Blu-ray becoming the
high-definition standard and following the launches of key franchise
titles, including Gran Turismo(TM) 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto(TM) IV, and
Metal Gear Solid(R)4: Guns of the Patriots. That momentum will continue
into the holidays and beyond, as PS3's software lineup will offer the most
depth and breadth of any platform across the industry, delivering highly
anticipated exclusives such as BUZZ!(TM): Quiz TV, LittleBigPlanet(TM),
Resistance(TM) 2, MotorStorm(TM) Pacific Rift, and Killzone(TM) 2.

I've got a 320 GB PS3 so i'm good to go. :)
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/08/20

Ok I just have to get my comment in before all hell breaks loose. The reason Sony is doing this is because they have publishing rights to those 2 games so the cost to include them will be minimal. Especially since they are older games.

The 160GB HDD has to be very close in cost to the 80 GB HDD and the 40GB before it. Bottom line is that Sony will lose less money on this sku vs the new 80GB sku.

I just wonder how well it will sell compared to the cheaper sku.

Last thing. Why doesn't Sony release a cheaper sku without a HDD and with a DS3 controller. I would go for that in a heartbeat. I could take the money I saved and apply that to a much larger HDD...
Written by Kenny K on 2008/08/20

Just when I thought sony was on the right track with the single SKU 80GB. =/
Written by blacktiger on 2008/08/20

PimpD your a dumbass,

why not release without HDD ???

Because technically we ain't paying for HDD, so why not get it for free if not, get it for cheaper then we do...

They are already loosing money on PS3 on any sku, so another word, they are selling HDD even cheaper then on the market !
Written by jb33 on 2008/08/20

Pimpdaddy...You must be forgetting that the PS3 lives off of it's hard drive with all the mandatory installs...lol. I don't know though...Uncharted is one of the best looking console games to date and it doesn't require any kind of install.

It seems like a few developers have their head wrapped around the CELL while the rest scratch their heads. I think PS3's all having hard drives is a luxury, but this feature seems to be taken advantage of by lazy developers thus far.

Whats the point of a Bluray disk that holds 50 gb if your gonna have 3 gb or 4 gb installs with every other game ? Slow read speed is the main reason for mandatory installs IMO.
Written by Kenny K on 2008/08/20

Blacktiger:

You are the last person to call anyone a dumbass. When a 160GB model is $100 more than a 80GB model, then yes you are paying for the HDD.

jb33:

Understanding the Cell has nothing to do with game installs
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/08/20

blacktiger: Don't make me slap your b!tch a$$. They should release an SKU without a HDD since you can go out and buy your own 2.5" SATA HDD.

Yes we are paying for the HDD. Maybe not as much as Sony is paying for it, but some of that cost is still relayed to people who purchase a PS3.

I mean Sony doesn't include HD cables or headsets. We have to buy those. So why charge me for a HDD that I will replace anyways???
Written by Kenny K on 2008/08/20

Sony pays far less for the HDD than we do. Same for MS to a much greater extent
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/08/20

jb33: I understand that the PS3 having a HDD is mandatory. Especially with the preinstalls. I just wish we could have the option of buying one without a HDD so we could go out and buy whatever capacity HDD we wan't.

Especially with the DRM for fully downloadble games such as WarHawk, GT5P, Wipeout, Socom, etc... I don't wan't the hassel of having to replace my HDD at a later date becuase it wasn't big enough. If I am going to spend the money I would like to do it the correct way the first time...

I mean I wonder how long it would take to fill up a 20/40/60/80/160 HDD with Sony's "10" year plan? :p

Kenny K: I agree and disagree. Last time I checked Sony was still losing money on manufacturing PS3 hardware. So I think it's hard to say what percentage of that MSRP we pay goes towards reimbursing Sony for the cost of the HDD.

I did read somewhere that Microsoft is actually making money on 360 hardware though...
Written by Kenny K on 2008/08/20

^ It's kinda complicated, but both sony and MS lose money on the hardware. The only SKU that MS makes any profit is the Elite model.

The impact that a HDD has on a console's price is the awkward part. Let's put it this way, the 60GB 360 is cheaper for MS to make than the 20GB 360, same with sony that the 80GB PS3 was cheaper to make than the 40GB SKU.

You have to understand how HDDs don't scale like other components do.
Written by QuestimElite on 2008/08/20

will it have PS2 B-C, anybody know?
Written by Kenny K on 2008/08/20

^ No BC
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/08/20

Kenny K: Actually I have a fairly good understanding of what your speaking of. Thats why I wish both Sony and Microsoft would have released "1" sku with a HDD, and "1" without. That way instead of shuffling these different sku's in and out of market we would have the choice of whatever capacity HDD we wanted.

Thats actually my biggest beef with Microsoft is the price they charge their customers for thier HDD's. If they are going to bend 360 owners over, I hope the package includes some sort of lubrication at least :p

I guess maybe that explains some of the loss Microsoft's Home Devices Division lost this fast fiscal quarter... Oh thats right I read a VgCraps article claiming they had insider info on the updated actual costs of manufacturing the consoles.

hxxp://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=1618

Towards the bottom they discuss what the cost of manufacturing the 360 should be with the new Jasper chipset.

But it is VgCraps...

i already have a 160GB ps3... got it back in launch :)
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/08/20

incoming00: Ok. How much did it cost you total. Console. Cost of new HDD. HD Cables. Bluetooth headset. Did you replace 6-axis with DS3? Be honest. I want to see how much money somebody would have saved by waiting 2-3 years after launch...
Written by incoming00 on 2008/08/20

console(60gb)+game+controller+warranty= $739 out the door. no bluetooth needed already had one, not using HD cable, using my PS2 component cables(TV not HD ready). DS3 35 bucks. 160gb HDD 100 bucks.

Sony will outsell MS this year in USA
Written by incoming00 on 2008/08/20

@Sky, thats kinda hard to claim now seeing that Sony keeps adding new SKU's at the same price point.
Written by Sky on 2008/08/20

Most people are buying the higher end SKu's compared to the 40gb.. I check sales age all the time of Neogaf.. just look at the MGS4 bundle.. its selling like hotcakes compared to the bare 40gb
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/08/20

Sky: The reason the 80GB MGS4 bundle is outselling the 40GB sku is becuase Sony is phasing out all existing stock of the 40GB sku in advance of the new 80GB sku launching next month. From what I have been reading the 40 GB's are scarce.

We will see who outsells who once the rumored 360 price cuts hit the 2nd week of September. If I were Sony I would be more worried about Japan since the US has already shifted to the 360. The 360 just sold in 1 week what the PS3 sells in 2 :p
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/08/20

Dual Shock 3 is a controller that still receives very little support from major third-party developers. Even new games like Soul Caliber 4 still do NOT support the RUMBLE feature in Dual Shock 3 controllers.

Also...does anyone know of this $500 version of the Playstation 3 will include a high-definition cable of any kind?

Does anyone know if this $500 version of the PS3 will include a headset of any kind?

It was always a really cool thing the way the Xbox 360 came with the High-Definition Cables and a Headset...it SUCKS that the Playstation 3 does NOT come with those accessories, because it means you need to go buy them the instant you connect your system.
Written by dudeman on 2008/08/20

you are correct sky. Stores and online retailers can't keep the MGS4 bundle in stock. This new 160 GB with Uncharted is going to be just as popular if not more popular considering you are getting one of the best games this generation for free!!

Consumers WIN!
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/08/20

Krogan, gtfo with your stupid ass comments. Soul Caliber 4 is the only game I can think of that does not support rumble.

High definition cables can be found at monoprice.com for just over $3. Get a life.

Bluetooth headset cost me a grand total of $15 (less than a play and charge battery kit for my 360 controller. Oh noes, $19 dollars.

5 dead xbox 360's are certainly much cheaper for me to replace.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/08/20

VaeVictus: I know you say that you had 5 360's take a sh!t on you. Does that mean your on 360 number 6? Also how many times did you have to actually buy a new 360. As in how many total 360's did you pay for.

I bet I got you beat. I paid for 2 PS1's and 3 PS2's. Man I love Sony for that :p

Damn only $4.19 for a 6 foot HDMI cable? F*ck you Circuit City and your rip off cable. Bastards.

I need a new BlueTooth Headset though. The Jabra I got with WarHawk hurts my ears... What did you get yours?
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/08/21

I bought my 1st 360 and a replacement warranty. The replacement warranty (at eb games) allowed me to exchane it for another. My next 3 all broke down within a years time. My last one worked one month past the one year standard warranty (not a RRoD) and M$ wouldn't replace it, even though I had to send it in twice this year. So I had to buy a new elite and hope it worked.
Written by blacktiger on 2008/08/21

100 dollars more is not just HDD,

do some research !

There is more features than that...
