Cliffy B Says 'Internet Facilitates Dickishness' >
2008/09/29 16:44:44: Posted by DM
The infamous Cliffy B. over at Epic, the voice of Gears of War, says he has no plans to repeat what Denis Dyack of Silicon Knights did with his Too Human title, and respond to the internet flamers in person. Cliff maintains that "if you do a good enough job, your fans will come to your aid and defend you." He is absolutely right.

"You have to have thick skin to be in this business and be some sort of public figure," he explained. "I think one needs to be very careful when dealing with those kinds of criticisms on the Internet, because you're never going to fully get rid of it."

Even we learned this, may be Denis needs a lesson again.

Xbox 360 nearing limits capability - Epic

Epic said that, interesting...

But yo that character with cowboy hat, running against the enemy looks sick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/09/29

F@gTiger where in that article does it say that?
Written by incoming00 on 2008/09/29

doesnt Cliffy B not want to be called Cliffy B anymore?

well... duh
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/09/29

BlackTiger is still sipping on that Sony KoolAid, waiting for 4D games running at 120fps on 2 1080P HDTV's. All while using his PS3 as a dedicated server. All while curing cancer on the only true next generation, true high definition videogame console. I mean isnt that what Sony's PR said???

Meanwhile the rest of us in the real world knows that neither the 360 or PS3 is close to maxing out, and the PS3 and 360 are pretty much even when it comes to graphics.

Anyways it is probably smart not to respond to internet criticism. Expecially living in these times where fanboysim is running rampant everywhere.

Written by VaeVictus on 2008/09/29

Yeah, I thought he wanted to be called Cliff Daddy or something like that?

He did say he hates the PS3 controller. I'm surprised some of you guys didn't jump on that.
Written by madgunde on 2008/09/29

@B1ueBurneR

blacktiger is referring to a quote that's mentioned in the Eurogamer video that the article is referring to here:

hxxp://www.eurogamer.net/tv_video.php?playlist_id=15086

Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/09/29

you missed the point Madgunde, that wasn't in the article link above. This particular news article. but anyways I know what he was referring about, that which was taking out of context, here's a update to that

"Epic quite recently stated that they were coming close to the graphical limit of what the 360 is capable of…

CliffB…Yeah, that quote was taken out of context

So it’s not true?

Cliffy B -I think we are pushing the 360; the system’s not going to get any more RAM or a faster processor. But at the same time that puts the impetus on our programmers and our artists to be smarter about what they work with. It’s amazing what programmers can do so I wouldn’t count our guys out yet."

madgunde: I think you and BlackTiger need to get a room. This is the second times in 2 days that you have come to his defense.

I mean you have to actually listen to a 9 minute interview to hear about Gears 2 supposedly maxing the 360, and if BlackTiger had bothered to listen to the whole interview Cliffy B actually shoots down the notion that they have maxed out the 360.

He says they are pushing it a fair amount, but he is also sure they can push the envelope even further. The interviewer even says "Mr Gears is convinced there is plenty of juice in the box left".

Why would BlackTiger comment the way he did? Because he is a blind Sony droid who worships Sony and hates Microsoft. Is he afraid that any of the 360's success will come at the the expense of the PS3's failures?

Sounds like the typical insecure FUD that the Sony Defense Force likes to spew on the internet. I mean heaven forbid that the other guy at Epic was trying to hype up Gears of War 2 and the Unreal Engine, yet somehow his comment was taken out of context, and turned into flamebait material against the 360. Thanks for making me have to put my XDF hat on. It's really appreciated.

B1ueBurneR: Damn you beat me to it.

VaeVictus: I saw a huge blow up on N4G about him saying he hates the PS3 controller. I dont hate the PS3 controller. It's good for fighters, sports, rpgs, and platformers. I just happen to prefer the 360 for shooters and racing games. So I really saw nothing to jump on... I would just rather jump on BlackTiger for being a Playstation Polesmoking Puppet.
Written by Xenos on 2008/09/29

The quote was pulled out of context and people jumped on it.

What console has ever been "maxed out" 3 years in a console generation? If you guys recall, Epic also claimed they "maxed out" the 360 with Gears 1 pre-release and look at the improvements in Gears 2.

Off the top of my head Oblivion, GRAW 1, GRAW 2, and Gears 1 have all used the full power of the 360 and yet the games keep looking and running better. Some people can see games maxing out a console when it uses all the RAM, shader ALUs, threads, and etc. The problem here is that EVERY game uses every available resource ANY system provides. It all matters to how well your code pushes these resources.

Many developers have just worked on their 1st gen software for the 360. Look at Oblivion to Fallout, Graw 1 to GRAW 2, Gears 1 to Gears 2, Assassin's Creed to Prince of Persia, and other examples to the leaps these studios make between their 1st gen and 2nd gen games.

I'm not trying to really boast about the 360 alone, this applies to all systems. It has been this way since the beginning of the home console era. It's also one of the most fascinating parts of console development IMO, see how much you can exceed expectations with getting that juice out of the box.

So I really don't understand how anyone can really believe what the fanboys feed.

OH MY GOSH, DID U GUYS WATCH THE VIDEO, LIKE COME ON RELAX,

Am i drinking Sony's Kool aid because its not true,

but what would you call if it's true ???

if you watch the video, you'll see it says that !!!

in the video it's 6:30 timeline....

Let's see what you all have to say now...

Man PimpD already went nuts...

lol !!! BEFORE HE EVEN READ THE NEWS...
Written by blacktiger on 2008/09/29

Oh and umm, do you really think it's a huge improvement with Gears 1 to Gears 2 ?

I just thought the lighting were good, but thats it,

Anyways I think PimpD probably lives with gays, that he end up becomming homophobic, notice he calls all sony fan boys faggot or anything related....

Anyways Cliffy B is right about too human !
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/09/29

blacktiger: Like Oh My Gosh, you have selective hearing. Because you totally took what was said in the interview out of context. Then ignored the other parts of the interview, and twisted/spinned/manipulated one sentence in the interview to attack the 360s capabilities.

Then your champion, your hero, your savior, your lover(???) tries to defend what you said because he actually agrees with your FUD.

Funny how the SDF works here on GamersReports. Why dont you pull your lips away from Sony's um "equipment" and actually take a look at games on the 360. You claim the PS3 blows the 360 out of the water. That the PS3 has all the good games and the 360 has crap. Wheres the proof?

Your beloved Killzone 2 will be lucky to pull even with Gears of War 2 in terms of graphics let alone surpass it, and KX2 has been in development for twice as long.

Lets see what 4+ years and a 40 million dollar budget along with the power of the "Cell" and "Blu-Ray" gives you in comparison to a console that is nearing it's limits and doesn't have the almighty Cell or Blu-Ray.

I find it amushing that PS3 fanboys are still on this PS3 is more powerful than the 360 trip when there hasn't been "1" single game to support Ken Kuturagi's claim that the 360 is actually an Xbox 1.5 or that the Cell is twice as powerful as the 360's CPU.

Wheres your FUDtastic proof???
Written by VaeVictus on 2008/09/29

I've noticed the dramatic difference in how good today's games look versus just two years ago. I bought F.E.A.R. , Saints Row and Crackdown used for $30 ( I know, evil Gamestop) for the 360. I could immediately tell that F.E.A.R. just didn't look as good as games today. To think that either system has been tapped by now is ridiculous.

As far as KZ2 is concerned...yes, it looks great. Hopefully the millions have been well spent redefining every aspect of this game so it's wait and cost are well justified. I think they'll pull off some amazing stuff that will have GAME fans wanting more.

I love being an owner of both consoles. It's like having two different hot chics at the same time, only a lot less fun. (and gaming is fun as sh*t)
Written by arthur56k on 2008/09/29

blue = the ownage
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/09/30

VaeVictus: I agree with you. Being a dual console owner of the PS3 and 360 is the only way to go. Toss in the Wii that I own and it's like 2 hot chics and thier fat friend. But fat friends are good for at least one thing. If you know what I mean :p

Anyways I do think KZ2 looks fantastic. But only time will tell how it compares to Gears2. Either way if one game looks better than the other, it wont be by leaps and bounds. It will me marginal at best.

Only the delusional would think otherwise...
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2008/09/30

@Athur56k, thanks but you know how I roll, if I can call you on your BS, then I will. But then again F@gtiger Has been owned so much that he's in the negative below 50.

@Madgunde WTF is your name supposed to mean anyways?? you know I have mad respect for you to call you a blind Sony Fanboy but I will say that you are one sided and if continue on your path you will eventually be a Sky or F@gTiger. And be torn to shreds with Facts like them. But I know you know better than that, your not blind *I think*
Written by tr1p1ea on 2008/09/30

Id care more about AI or more realistic interaction than graphics tbh.
Written by Xenos on 2008/09/30

Where does KZ2 even come into this? KZ2 is awesome looking, but just like Uncharted, I wish the fanboys would quit championing these games as graphical benchmarks when they can't even put the graphical accomplishments of these games in context.
Written by blacktiger on 2008/09/30

tr1p1ea, your right but that doesn't mean they won't focus on the graphic, right ?
Written by Xenos on 2008/09/30

@ tr1p1ea,

Regarding the AI in Gears 2:

"The enemy AI, as in the main campaign, seems significantly improved, with Locusts rolling out of trouble or making a break for distant cover when they come under fire."

Written by madgunde on 2008/09/30

OK, everyone just relax. I wasn't defending anyone, simply answering the question about where the quote came from. I didn't even make any comment on it, say I agreed or disagreed with it. Simply providing info. You guys are like a bunch of chicks on the rag. Grow up.

@B1ueBurneR

My name means nothing. I just made it up.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/09/30

madgunde: Your getting awfully defensive now. Then you call us all chicks on a rag, followed by grow up.

Double standards anyone?

You cant throw out a "childish" insult and then tell everyone not to act like children. Hipocrite much???

You need a tissue now? Now go ahead and try to twist and spin out of that one...
Written by Xenos on 2008/09/30

@ madgunde, the only person that really addressed you is Pimp so I don't know why "everyone" needs to relax.

Besides it doesn't matter if you imply what you think, we all know that you agree with him anyways.
Written by madgunde on 2008/09/30

@PimpDaddy

Why shouldn't I get defensive? Two people are attacking a very simple and innocent post of mine in which I was simply answering someone's question. One of them happens to be a moderator. How am I supposed to feel? I'm sorry, but attacking a poster for no good reason is childish. Calling them out for doing it in a language they can understand is just good communication skills. :-P

@Xenos

B1ueBurner did as well. But you are correct. "Everyone" was too broad, I figured people would know I meant "everyone who responded to me", but I only really meant PimpDaddy and B1ueBurneR.
Written by daveydz3 on 2008/09/30

i think i'm going to refer to CliffyB as Cpt. Obvious. lol
Written by madgunde on 2008/09/30

"Besides it doesn't matter if you imply what you think, we all know that you agree with him anyways."

@Xenos

I don't agree with blacktiger or disagree wrt his first post. If I had an opinion on the matter, I would have stated it. I wasn't implying anything with my post and anyone who says otherwise is way off base.
Written by madgunde on 2008/09/30

Part of the problem with a lot of the members here is that they have a strong bias against other members and it prevents them from being objective about their posts. They look for any reason to jump on them, and will read far more out of a post, no matter how neutrally it's written. It's always got to be about taking jabs at the other person's expense. Furthermore, such a climate of hate exists that if anyone dares agree with someone who's not popular, that person gets crapped on and made to feel unwelcome. In fact, any unpopular opinion on this site is met with extreme prejudice. It's just not conducive to open discussion and worse off, the moderators promote this kind of behavior by not setting a good example themselves.

In my opinion, this negative climate is partly preventing GamersReports from attracting new members and readership.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/09/30

MadGunde said: "@B1ueBurneR. blacktiger is referring to a quote that's mentioned in the Eurogamer video that the article is referring to here: hxxp://www.eurogamer.net/tv_video.php?playlist_id=15086

You injected yourself into a dispute between several members of this site. What did you expect was going to happen? You came to BlackTigers defense. Directly responded to another user by name.

Then I take this so called "jab" at you in fun and you get your panties all twisted up in a knot. You then take the time to insult with your own little "jab" and pretend your better than all of us by telling us to grow up.

Yet here you are helping to create the same problems that you say are keeping this site from growing.

I swear people like you have no business communicating with other members of society. Your the absolute worse. Give me a blind fanboy like BlackTiger anyday vs somebody such as yourself who lives in denial of his own words and behavior. Your a hipocrite. Plain and simple. Nobody read into anything you said. You put it all out there. If you didn't wan't to be misunderstood you shouldn't have spoken...

I'm not going to moderate this website the way you or anybody else wants it moderated. If thats a problem I suggest you complain to the admins or find a website that caters to your needs. I volunteer my time to moderate and choose to actively participate in the discussions. That's my deal. It's funny how the few complaints I get are because somebody wants me to do things thier way. Or they don't like a member. Or in your case "everybodys" picking on me. To which I say. WAH. Need a tissue? Stop crying already. Welcome to the real world that the rest of us live in, where people disagree and may not like you, where everyone has bias.

Before me there were no rules on here for the longest time. Nothing was being enforced. I have neither the time or desire to defend myself to somebody who has shown this website no loyalty. Who would rather complain about it instead of doing the very things he says will help improve it. This website is growing with or without you. Thats for certain Madgunde. It gets plenty of hits, it's just most people would rather read the news than participate in the discussion. I visit several videogame related websites a day, but this is the only where I regularly participate. So that is normal behavior. The people who do comment usually have the strongest opinions and want to be heard. They are the minority.

I know the people that do actively participate on GamersReports, do so because they like to talk with the other members of this website. You won't find a better community on any other videogame website.
Written by madgunde on 2008/10/01

@PimpDaddy

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think I'm providing valuable feedback, but if you're not interested or don't agree, that's your prerogative. You may want to look up moderate in the dictionary and maybe you'll understand how the WAY you participate in these comments is counter-intuitive to the role of moderating.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/10/01

Again thats my deal. I want to actively participate in the discussions on this site. I'm not being paid to do it. I'm just trying to clean some stuff up.

This website isn't for everyone. The culture is what it is. I'm sorry if you feel it is a popularity contest.

The fact is certain people on here have certain reputations. You put yourself in the position of Sony fanboy by your past comments. Just like I put myself in the position of 360 fanboy.

So once again you and I are stuck at a stalemate...
Written by madgunde on 2008/10/01

@PimpDaddy

We don't have to continually play the roles of 360 fanboy vs. PS3 fanboy. You don't have to always look at everything I post and assume there's some hidden agenda. You could just read what I write at face value and treat each new topic/discussion as completely independent rather than keeping this perpetual memory of everything someone has written in the past and treating each new post as just an addendum to all the previous discussions.

That's what I'm trying to do. I don't hold a grudge against you or anyone else just because we've had a disagreement in the past. But you really seem to make it personal, launching preemptive strikes against others and bringing up the past like this is some kind of continuing gang war.

I challenge everyone to forget all the past BS and treat every new discussion as though it is with people you've never had a discussion with before. It will be more civil, and probably be much more enlightening. In the process, new readers might feel more welcome to join in on the discussion.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/10/02

LOL. Ok. I challenge you to not defend Sony and attack Microsoft. You cant forget about the past. No matter what it defines who you are today.

What are we discussing Madgunde. Videogames. Guess what? Not every console, or every game, or every controller, or every online gaming service are created equally or even priced equally. There is so much to disagree with. Videogames is a very Volatile subject.

I swear your on the wrong site. People will disagree. People will argue. People will debate. People will not get along. People will hate. Welcome to the real world. Go play Rodney King elsewhere. If you want to stay here then kick back, relax, and join in on the fun. But please stop running down this site because it's not the happy touch feely sort of place you want it to be.

Written by madgunde on 2008/10/02

I have no problem with people disagreeing or arguing about a topic. That's what discussion is all about. I just feel the personal attacks are what bring the site down and create tension that gets in the way of good discussion. You seem to feel this community is perfect just the way it is, maybe it is for you, but if it's going to thrive it needs to appeal to a wider audience. I've been coming here for a while, and it's the only site where I only see the same 5 or 6 people posting comments on every article. Why do you think that is?

But why can't I defend Sony or attack Microsoft if that's my opinion? Or the other way around for that matter? If I disagree strongly with something they are doing. To not do that just because you or someone else thinks I shouldn't would be a form of censorship and suppressing freedom of ideas. I don't understand why expressing ones opinions is cause to be attacked personally, repeatedly.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/10/02

Are you still crying Madgunde? It's a free world. Free country. I live in the US. I believe in freedom of speech. So your opinion is your freedom. Peoples opinions towards you, or insults, or anything else are thier freedom of speech. Defend, attack, whatever. Post whatever. Just stop whinning when people jump down your throat. I am so sick and tired of people who feel like they are being picked on. If that is the case. Do something about it.

As long as I have been a member there has always been the same core group who comment. Big deal. The site is growing in other ways. Your not going to get the duscussion to go the way you want. So either suck it up or stop participating.

Either way things are alot better since I started moderating. The threads that get turned into fanboy bashing are far and few between.

I can't make everyone happy. So believe me when I say this. I am doing the best I can. You have to understand that this is a small website. You can go to any number of sites and get more news, and more people who participate.

This website will grow. But it has to grow properly. Most of the people who visit this site dont even register. But they keep on coming. Why is that? Is it perhaps the fact that they dont want to participate but would rather read??? I know I was one of those people for 6 months before I registered for this site. I would read, then after awhile I decided to jump into the fray. Haven't looked back since.
Written by madgunde on 2008/10/02

You tell me to do something about it, what do you think I'm doing? Are YOU still crying because I gave you some advice about how to be a better moderator? Now who's all defensive? If you actually care about the success of this site, you'd be more open to participants opinions and suggestions for improving it, even if you didn't agree with them. By arguing with me and being condescending you make it obvious that you have no interest in making the site better. God forbid someone should have an opinion on ways this site could be better. Let's shut them up by calling them whiners or tell them to suck it up or leave. You pretty much have proven my point.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/10/03

Why are you still here then. I cant get everybody to change. Do you want me to ban all of them because they did these "personal" attacks on other members such as yourself? Give me all the advice you wan't. Everybody and thier mom want's me to moderate this site differently. Whether it's banning certain members. Allowing them to use foul language. Ban for trolling. Not participate in the discussions, etc...

Your not giving me advice Madgunde. You want me to moderate the way you would or you think I should. How is that advice? If you want to moderate this website then ask the admins.

Bottom line is you posted a comment. People such as myself, B1ueBurner, and Xenos didn't agree with you sticking up for BlackTiger. Plus we knew your motive was to take a swipe at the 360 while sticking up for a fellow PS3 fanboy. SDF at it's best.

So here I am telling you to either suck it up and deal with the other members because I don't feel they have done anything wrong, or find a site that will accomodate you.

This site is improving. Your idea of making everybody get along by not allowing people to make jokes at each others expense just plain sucks. I can not and will not control the way people express thier opinions. At the same time I will enforce certain rules which I have made clear.

You are way too sensitive for this site. Try growing some thicker skin, a backbone, and a sense of humor so you can properly participate on this website. Instead of asking everybody else to change to accomodate you.

I can not and will not engage you in any more discussion on this matter in the public forums. You can PM me if you wish to continue this discussion.
Written by makatak on 2008/10/03

I just wanted to say that I've been visiting this site for a very long time now, I even registered my account but never really decided to post anything bcuz I rather site back and observe. But, even though Pimp and Madgunde both bring up interesting points and I disagree with Pimp on one issue, being moderator and being so involved in the comments on topics makes you bias/tainted and madgunde called you out on it. Basically, you cant be both....for about a month or so you really 'tried' to be more fair and balanced. It didnt fool anyone. Be honest about what and who you are and take some 'advice' every once in a while..it wouldnt hurt.
Written by madgunde on 2008/10/04

@PimpDaddy

You're so very wrong about my motives and your bias against me lead you to read stuff from a very simple and honest post that wasn't there. Read my first post again. Go ahead. I'll repeat it again: I was only answering the question about where he saw the quote. I didn't say anything else. Didn't add any opinion, didn't insult anyone. I wasn't even defending anyone, just answering a question about where the quote was from. I had every right to get annoyed that you and B1u3BurneR reacted to my post the way you guys did. Continuing to claim that I meant more than I've already told you I did is just ignorant and insulting. I never asked you at any point how to moderate. My criticism is in the way you participate considering YOU ARE a moderator. Why don't you try moderating yourself. There, now I'm giving you advice on how to moderate.

@makatak

Thanks for chiming in.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/10/04

Madgunde: I'm done with you and I'm done with moderating. You tell everyone to grow up, yet your the one still crying. Everyone knows your agenda. Your a Sony fanboy. Plain and simple. You always defend Sony and attack Microsoft. Plain and simple. You are SDF, I am XDF. One day you will wake up and realize your full of crap and your cute little comments that you want everybody to take as unbiased don't fool anybody.

Makatak: Yes I would love to thank the guy who joined in January of 2008 with a whopping 2 posts for chiming in too. He thinks moderating a website means you have to have unbiased opinions on videogames too which is total horse sh!t. All it means is moderating the individuals in an unbiased way, not thier opinions. Try reading the news when DM posts his opinion. It's not unbiased in anyway.

If Makatak would have noticed, I have taken action against individuals regardless of whether they were pro 360: Krogan, Xenos or pro PS3: BlackTiger, Sky. I have upheld my end of the bargain which was to eliminate the cussing, and reduce the personal attacks. All I had ask GamersReports in return was that I be allowed to partake in the discussions. I have said many times that my opinions to not reflect those of GamersReports.

So shame on me for taking a little jab at Madgunde for defending BlackTiger. Shame on me that he got all butt-hurt and cried foul over something that was meant as a joke. Shame on me that Madgunde has no sense of humor and is more sensitive than any woman I know. Shame on me for trying to be the resident clown of GamersReports. Shame on me for actually caring about this site, instead of complaining about it and tearing it down every chance I get.

Since I am obviously the root of the problems with GamersReports according to one member(madgunde) who left this site and showed it no loyalty yet wants it moderated the way he wants when he comes back, and according to another member(makatak) who never participates yet thinks his opinion is worth a damn. I am officially stepping down as moderator for gamersreports so I can fully concentrate on sharing my "biased" opinion with everyone on GamersReports.
