MS CEO Ballmer Calls Xbox360 'Absolute Home Run' >
2008/10/06 10:16:18: Posted by DM
Steve Ballmer, the Microsoft CEO, called the Xbox360 an "absolute home run," when speaking to The Mercury News recently. The comment was made when Ballmer was asked if the recent Xbox360 console price cuts were made because of waning sales, and may be because MS had "run out of ideas to boost sales." Ballmer vehemently denied this, and went on to make the comment.

"No, that's the craziest thing I've ever heard anybody say,” answered Ballmer. "All consoles start at higher prices. They always come down through the long cycle."

Bets, anyone?
Written by incoming00 on 2008/10/06

so does that make the Wii a Grand Slam?
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/10/06

incoming00: Basically. I don't think even Nintendo thought the Wii was going to be this successful.

In comparison to the first Xbox I would have to agree with Mr. Ballmer
Written by Xenos on 2008/10/06

Yeah when you go from losing $4 billion in 4 years to profiting and matching your former install base in less time, I would call that success. Not Ninty level of success, but still a success.

Besides when Sony or MS talk about success, the Wii or Ninty is rarely mentioned. They don't exist in their world for the most part

Yeah I wouldnt aknowledge my competition if they were handing me my a$$ either :p
Written by Xenos on 2008/10/06

Well yeah, that's the point I was trying to make Pimp lol

Both sony and MS mainly concentrate on each other and ignore the Wii/Ninty. The only time you'll see Ninty acknowledged is if they are beaten in any way like the one stupid week the 360 sold higher than the Wii.

360 seems to be doing as well as the original xbox with the exception that ms now own the hardware licenses (instead of rushing off-the-shelf stuff) = lower manufacturing.

I wonder how profitible the 360 has been? I doubt it has closed the $4bil loss gap of xbox1, but if you ignore that, anyone have any figures?

If it wasn't for kids, the Wii would be a flop, it's an awful console for any real gamer. The graphics alone make me puke, especially when my last gen Xbox has better graphics and does HD. Anyways, once Microsoft takes out Sony (If they haven't already), Nintendo will be next.

What kind of mentality is that kronix?

Just like there are plenty of great games on the ps2/xbox/GC/360/ps3 there are plenty of great games on the Wii.

I own around 40 games and have owned the majority of consoles in the past generations, but I want a Wii right now, does that mean I'm not a "real gamer"?

Honestly, I question if anyone who looks at the in this manner knows what being a gamer is all about.

Also, MS didn't take out Sony and we shouldn't want them to. I want a 1 console future, but not that way, not 1 taking over the world.

Edit: "looks at the Wii in this manner"

Xenos, I guess I should have said Hardcore Gamer. Majority of hardcore gamers aged 14-40 would choose Xbox 360 or PS3 over the Wii (Keyword - Majority). My point basically is, me being a hardcore gamer, The Wii looks pathetic on my 40" Sony XBR, and the games are to childish. I want good graphics, gore, and good sport games without using a Wii-mote that doesn't even work that well and is not really even that much fun. Also I truly believe Microsoft will eventually dominate this market, but you're corrtect, competition benefits no body but gamers!

So I'm not a "hardcore" gamer now?

You are the perfect problem with "gamers" these days. If it doesn't blow up, bleed, swear, or feature gray graphics it's not HARDCORE!!

Give me a break, games can have color, character, innosence and still be a hardcore game. Look at Viva pinata for a perfect example. It's marketed as a casual game but in reality it has too much depth for the average Wii gamer and attracts more hardcore gamers. Same with Banjo, Ratchet and Clank, and so on.

I play my Dreamcast on my 32" HDTV and the games look damn fine, so I don't see why it would be any different for a Wii which does feature those hardcore games you are looking for.

Gamers have problems? My personal opinion is the Wii sucks, same with everybody I know. Just personal opinion, don't take it to heart pal.

i think we've created this elitist attitude for gaming. we call it hardcore. what is it to be a hardcore gamer exactly?

must we own every new system? must we have a 50" or larger HDTV and 7.1 surround sound to be hardcore? must own every triple a title in existence? must we spit on the casual game market?

these are questions we should ask.
Written by arthur56k on 2008/10/06

hardcore gamers are the minority kronixz, we form well, maybe less than 10% or 15% of the whole gaming populace
Written by Xenos on 2008/10/06

Casuals make up roughly 70% of the video game market arthur.

IMO, there are 3 kinds of gamers. You have the hardcore/core gamers who will wait it out and get a system at launch and buy numerous games a year. Then you have the mainstream gamers, these are guys who just want to play their Maddens, GTAs, Grand Turismos, and anything else that is really "cool" or hot at the time. Finally we have our casual audience who will play everything from Guitar Hero to Wii play, Wii fit, Uno, Solitaire, etc.
Written by PimpDaddy on 2008/10/07

What if you are all of the above. Buy all of the above consoles, all of the above games, and like games in all of the above genres???

Does that make me the Ultimate Gamer???

^^^^hahahahahahahahaha, nope.

People's tastes are way too diverse to categorize everyone into 3-4 neat little labels. One label doesn't have to describe someone completely. You can simply fit into multiple categories. It's similar to musical tastes. Some people only like one genre of music, while others have very diverse tastes. To each his own. If you like the games a console offers, that's good. If you don't like them for whatever reason, that's good too.

We shouldn't get too caught up in worrying about whether we fit the definition of a particular category or not. I mean, just the term "hardcore gamer" could mean a couple different things: 1) someone who plays hardcore games, 2) someone who plays a lot of games, 3) someone who spends a lot of time gaming, 4) both 1 & 2, 5) both 2 & 3, 6) both 1 & 3, or 7) all of the above). Others might define a hardcore gamer in other ways, ie: how much money they spend on gaming or how much time they spend researching games and games technology. There's no reason one can't be a hardcore gamer and a casual gamer at the same time too.
