MS Prepping External Blu-Ray Drive >
2008/10/08 12:00:47: Posted by DM
According to Xbit Labs, Microsoft is prepping an external Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox360 console. Unlike Toshiba, who is still anti-Blu-Ray, MS is adapting, it seems. It is rumored that the product will cost between $100-$150 USD, and the device will be manufactured by Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp., a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Toshiba Corp. Time will tell, but this is certainly a smart move by MS.

Rumor for now
Written by incoming00 on 2008/10/08

if true, i should convince my bro to getting this so he can enjoy blu-rays too. he only has 360 and refuses to buy the HD-DVD addon(dont blame him lol), so hopefully this will do :p

My question is will the 360 output true native 1080P resolution through it's outputs??? No sense in having this add-on if you can't get the full resolution out of the movies...
Written by Xenos on 2008/10/08

Ummm the 360 has always been able to do 1080p. HD-DVD, VoD, and game do 1080p now, so where is the confusion coming from?
Written by incoming00 on 2008/10/08

@Xenos,

from what i know, 360's without an HDMI output only upscale to 1080p. the newer models and elite model with HDMI output at 1080p. i think thats what PimpDaddy was referring to
Written by Xenos on 2008/10/08

Oh.

Well no, there is not upscaling to be had unless the source is under 1080p itself.

Some TVs accept a 1080p signal through component, some don't, it's different for every TV. However if the concern is if 1080p is possible over component, it is.

Honestly I would suggest a VGA cable for the 360 over component and sometimes over HDMI. If you have a 1080p TV, it's almost certain to have a VGA plug, so there shouldn't be anything to worry about. =)

oops.. i think i meant to say component does 1080p with compression, not upscaling lol......
Written by Xenos on 2008/10/08

Compression is something that needs to be computed and isn't done through the cable itself.

The signal would be sent in analog form, not digital, and that may degrade the IQ a bit, but it's still possible and usually just as good.

I think it will be a true 1080p,

Not bad...

But they should've thought of this before cause IRON MAN MOVIE has sold a lot and DARK KNIGHT IS EXPECTING HUGE SALES !

I hope it's a rumour, Because I find Xbox 360 a unique console, with their own styel... apart from PS3

Xenos, you sure about using VGA? I found it totally washed out, colors were really faded. I'd almost rather use composite if it wasn't for the resolution factor.

It'll be interesting to see what it costs if this is indeed true.

The PS3 will still be the better blu ray player of the two. Unless it's $99.99, I can't see buying it as a 360 owner alone.

I'm skeptical about this. Having a bluray addon might help convince some who might otherwise buy a PS3 for the BluRay to get a 360 instead. However, it might also remind people of the PS3s hardware value as it will make it easier to compare apples to apples. I'm not sure MS stands to benefit from reminding consumers that they gotta pay extra for something their competitor includes at a better price. However, for those who prescribe to the "I'd rather have the choice to buy it or not, even if it costs more" school of thought, I suppose this is a good thing. Then there is the matter of MS's media download business which doesn't benefit from help BluRay succeed. I'm really skeptical, but I hope this rumor is true, because MS officially backing BluRay is good for the success of the format and will spur adoption.
