Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

The original Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter was one of the best first-generation Xbox360 games. There were flaws, as with any game, but they were minor and usually nothing that prevented the game from being played. On top of that, it was one of the first games which really highlighted how well Xbox Live on the Xbox360 worked, with friend invites, record keeping, and gaming with friends. When the GRAW Chapter 2 add-on was released, people griped at the $19.99 USD or so price, but most of us purchased it nonetheless. While most of us knew that the download was mostly made up of things that should have been included in the game in the first place, we ignored that and plopped down our MS points all the same.

When Ubisoft announced that GRAW 2 would be release within a year of the first game, most people assumed (correctly) that the game would basically be an updated version of the original game, with different maps and a single player storyline. While this could be considered a bad thing, some of us realize that to be given more of a good thing without any major changes is not an unattractive proposition. Does GRAW 2 fit like an old comfortable shoe? Let’s find out.

The story in GRAW 2 is a direct continuation of the story in the original game. When you being the single player campaign in GRAW 2, Capt. Mitchell (the protagonist in the GRAW series), has literally just returned from the final battle of the original GRAW. Before he even gets a chance to grab some much needed r&r, he is once again called on by his country. It seems that now, Mexican rebels have thrown the country into a full-scale civil war. The conflict is centered in Juarez, a border town, and El Paso New Mexico, which is conveniently inside the United States.

As the game progresses, Capt. Mitchell and the Ghosts eventually have to stop a band of Mexican-hired mercenaries from using nuclear weapons against the United States. I am oversimplifying the story; of course, there are twists and turns throughout the story in classic Tom Clancy fashion. Combine all of this with a Mexican President who is dead set not only with making America look like the cause of the civil war, but also look like Americans are actually fighting on the side of the usurpers. The rest of the story should be filling out in your mind as you finish reading this, exactly what you think will happen, does – not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but if you are looking for more than a rudimentary story from the Tom Clancy games other than Splinter Cell, then you are looking in the wrong place.

This game could ostensibly be called GRAW 2.0 and it would accurately convey the level of improvement that the game has over the first Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. As I said twice before, that is not necessarily a bad thing. We can start out with the graphical improvements. While some are maintaining that the game uses the exact same engine as the previous GRAW, I have found that this is not exactly true. First of all, the lighting and shadows have been improved, in some instances to a great degree. You can really tell what has been tweaked with the lighting when you are walking through the trees and the sun breaks through the branches. The light hits you and it looks almost real, and the shadows react perfectly (yes, the shadows still have those weird boxy edges, unfortunately). The character models have been textured in a more realistic fashion with textures that have patterns with greater real world appeal. The environments, although bland and empty most of the times, have also been tweaked – they have been rendered and textured to look even more realistic than last time. One of the final graphical tweaks in GRAW 2 is the explosions. Truly, I did not think that the explosions could get much better than they were in the first game, but the gurus at Ubisoft have found a way. Simply put, you will not find a better, more real looking explosion in a video game than those in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. You will find yourself blowing up everything in sight just to see that wondering C4 explosion.
