Shadowrun

The Shadowrun Universe, for those of you who may not know, was not invented specifically for the Xbox360 title. Shadowrun has been a Cyberpunk pen-and-paper RPG for almost 20 years. It is also noteworthy to mention that Microsoft has only loosely based the game on the Shadowrun Universe, much to the chagrin of the hardcore RPG fans, mind you. Shadowrun is also the first Xbox360 game to feature a very unique feature. Players of the PC version of Shadowrun who use Windows Vista can play online alongside Xbox360 Xbox Live players.

Something that was not widely publicized about this Shadowrun game was that it does not feature a single player mode. The only thing that this game has that comes close is a six part training mode that you can use to learn the game’s seemingly complicated magic and tech system. Beyond that though, if you do not have Xbox Live, this game is near-worthless. You can set up bot matches, of course, but even with four local players the game is not nearly as fun as full 16 player Live matches.

The story of this Shadowrun game, like I said, does not follow the strict cannon of the previous Shadowrun pen-and-paper and video games. The game takes place circa 2050, when magic has been re-introduced into the world after an almost 5000 year absence. In Santos, Brazil, a Ziggeraut (step pyramid) has been uncovered that contains many powerful magic relics and artifacts. The game pits the RNA Corporation, an organization that wants to control the artifacts and, if possible, magic itself, against the Legacy, a band of freedom fighters who believe that magic belongs to everyone and no one, and that the artifacts should be accessible to all.

The Shadowrun Universe, at least in this game, consists of four races – humans, trolls, elves, and dwarves. As I said, Shadowrun also features magic, which is powered by something called essence. Every race has a different amount of essence, and each race also has different inherent abilities. What is great about the abilities though, is that many races have an ability that will counteract an ability another race possesses. For instance, Trolls have skin that hardens when hit, thus making it much harder to kill trolls, but Dwarves have an ability that drains essence from any enemy or friendly they are nearby, thus negating the Troll’s ability to harden. The racial abilities are well thought out and complement each other very well.
