Dynasty Warriors 6

The maps are setup in the DW games in such a way as to make travelling a bit complicated – a bit too complicated, if you ask me. The way the elevation is indicated makes it hard to tell if you can jump up or down in order to reach the next objective. This is important because at times you will find yourself running to help your AI officers because they are a bunch of incompetent donkeys, for the most part, that is. The biggest favor you can do yourself in DW6 is to check the map before you begin the battle at all, and look under the “Conditions” menu choice. This will tell you exactly what needs to be accomplished in order for you to be considered victorious, which ends the map there and then. The faster you reach the goal or kill the boss, the less damage your side takes, and the less whining you have to put up with from your officers.

As I said there are some minor additions to the series with Dynasty 6. First, you can now climb ladders. Earth-shaking addition, I know. If that does not impress you, may be this one will – you can now swim in almost any body of water. Simply scintillating, I know. Hard to keep your hands off the Amazon website “buy now” button, isn’t it? You can use these new modes of transportation to help you accomplish goals like defeat the ballista shooting at you from the top of the castle walls or take a shortcut across a moat to help breach a castle perimeter. Are these additions really necessary or useful? No, but I appreciate the fact that Koei is still trying to add new features after 10 some odd years of Dynasty Warriors games. It would have been a real pleasure if these new additions were the basis for a complete overhaul of the map and level dynamic in the game, but that did not happen. Everything still feels just as two dimensional as ever, and it is Dynasty Warriors through and through.

The other “major” change in DW6 is the introduction of the “Renbu” system. This is Koei’s fancy Asian name for their chain kill reward system. The longer you can chain together enemy deaths, the more damage you can potentially inflict, and the flashier the attacks you can perform become. The Renbu gauge is a valiant effort to add a bit of depth to the combat system, but since you really cannot use combos while doing it because it will kill the chaining; it almost ends up taking away depth! Ironic, I know. It does provide another way to go, though if you just want to wail on one button for a level or two to see what it is like.

Dynasty Warriors games do have RPG elements added in order to help players work towards something, some ultimate goal. Your experience points can be used to unlock different stages in each characters skill tree. These usually cost a point or two to unlock, and you receive about 5-6 points per successful level. The skills you can unlock include health bar extensions and Musou bar extensions. It also includes attack and defense attribute additions. There are even certain skills that can be unlocked along the tree that will allow you to access Renbu level 2 or Musou attack level 2. These are just powered up versions of the specials with fire or lighting animations added.
