As you progress through the game, as I said, you will be able to choose how to play. If you decide to really sneak through everything and not take sides, then you will be hugging a lot of walls. It is a good thing that Snake has a new feature at his disposal if you choose to do this. The new feature is called OctoCamo. This is named after the Octopus’ ability to mimic any surface it presses against. Snake can now mimic any surface he is hiding against. Early on, you will see the benefits of this feature if you decide to play the stealth route.

Of course, you can also decide to choose a side (not officially, but just by shooting at the PMC or rebel soldiers). This does make for an easier time of things in the first few chapters, as you can stroll through the rebel base without fear if you help to kill PMC soldiers. If you decide to kill rebels, the only benefit you get from the PCM guys is that they won’t shoot you on sight. They are still as rude as ever, and they will still treat you with contempt.

I am sure that all of you have seen some of the new machines from MGS4 in any number of videos released on the net. The most recognizable of these is the Gecko or the Irving, as the UN calls it. These are the two-legged walking tank-esque machines that make real creepy sounds and seem like they are unstoppable killing machines. The first time you run into one you will be afraid, trust me. The thing is, once they start spewing green goo from where the anus should be, and then make a gaseous sound to go along with it, it kind of takes away from the “menace” factor. That, plus they are fairly easy to avoid, so it makes the Geckos not really all that scary after all. All that said though, they do fit in perfectly with the Metal Gear universe, technology-wise.

(More minor spoilers ahead) In Metal Gear Solid 4 you get to ride in a few different vehicles. This helps to bring the game even more towards an action-oriented title. A Hummer (of course), a real nice Triumph motorcycle, and inside a special jet, are just three of the conveyances Snake gets to utilize. Mind you, the vehicle scenarios do not last too long, but they are done very well, and break up the game perfectly. While you are aiming manually with the L1 and R1 buttons, as is the MG custom, you will get the standard camera angles. I have to suggest though, that you let go here and there to watch the vehicle scenes from the pre-determined Kojima camera angles. They really make you wonder if Hideo is in the wrong business – it is possible he was a movie director in his last life.

Along with the OctoCamo I mentioned before, Snake also has a new health item to worry about – a psych gauge. This also comes with a psychologist on call, believe it or not, and adds a new gameplay element as Snake now needs to address high stress and low psych gauge values with medicine. If you do not treat yourself, everything will start to suffer. This includes aiming, talking, hiding, and even walking – the more you neglect your mental health, the more everything suffers, even the amount of sound you make while moving increases. A tip from me on this one folks – don’t stress the stress gauge too much, it usually tends to take care of itself.
