This basically means the mousepad has the standard rubberized backing and the surface is designed for performance. On the “speed” version of the Mantis mat, the surface is smooth and quite sheen actually, which lends itself to fast motion. The “control” version of the Mantis mat has a tiny checkerboard type design on the surface of the mat, which helps optical (and ball) mice sense movement easier and more precisely. For the actual performance testing, as I said earlier, I used the Razer Copperhead 2000dpi mouse, set at the max. This mouse lets users change dpi settings on the fly, and when testing with both F.E.A.R. and Battlefield 2, there was no problem whatsoever. After 2 hours of play on both games, I did not manage to roll off the side of the mousepad once, as I had expected. Not only that, but the surface of both mats seemed to help dissipate heat from a sweating hand. There was a slight issue with the bottom of my palm getting irritated a bit when using the Control version of the Mantis, and while it was only slight, I can certainly see it becoming an issue with long hours of gameplay. If you are a player who uses more wrist movement than arm movement, then this should not be an issue. I, however, move more arm. The mousepad’s rubberized bottom made this pad stick to the desk like glue. Even on my smooth formica desktop, there was no movement. The mousepad itself is easy to brush off if its gets dust or dirt on it, but be advised, since the mousepad is fabric, it does not deal well with liquid. Both Mantis mats are some of the best fabric based mousing surfaces you can get. Now, if you are not a gamer who uses fabric mousepads, then these are not for you. The Mantis mats will not turn a solid mouser into a fabric mouser. The pricetag for this mouse pad is $24.99, and while some would say it is not worth it, we say it is.
