Of course, EA’s deal with ESPN makes the lack of presentation a bit more tolerable. You can fight in different arenas including ESPN Wednesday and Friday night fights as well as pay-per-view events. Also, you will be treated to the vocal styling of ESPN’s boxing announcer whose name escapes me at the moment. EA also made a deal with Burger King and Dodge for this game. Expect many BK and Dodge plugs as the career mode goes on. They sponsor matches and give you prize packages. Let’s go to the mode by mode. The play now mode is where one or two players can just pick up a controller and go. You can select any of the pre-made boxers or boxing legends, or even a boxer you made in career mode. You can even fight featherweight against heavyweight if you are so inclined, but it would be a massacre. The ESPN classics mode was added as part of the EA-ESPN deal. In this mode you can relive some of the great matches from boxing history. Also, any rivalry matches from career mode will be added here. Rivalries in career mode are random boxers that the game picks to hate you. These become your “rivals.” They are no harder than the regular matches. Career mode is the single player adventure mode. In this mode you create your own boxer and work through the trials and tribulations of the professional boxing circuit, building up your character as you go. You get to pick a trainer before each match, ranging from the local crotchety old man trainer who costs nothing, to the Burger King King, who is the most expensive trainer with a specialty of “heart” training. The one thing you will notice for sure in the career mode is just how dumb the AI can be. Some fights are difficult for sure, but overall finishing the career mode does not provide much of a challenge, even on hard. When famous boxers like Toney eat four haymakers in a row, you get a bit disappointed. |
