One of the main additions to this ES game is the fast travel ability. This is a welcome change. In the older ES games in order to travel to towns or landmarks you would have to walk there from the nearest city. You could use city to city transports, but that was the extent of it. This time around though, players can bring up the map and select any place they have already discovered and instantly warp there. This makes the game flow so much better that I cannot believe it took Bethesda this long to add it. Now, keep in mind, you can only fast travel to places you have discovered already. This does not include quest locations that NPCs have told you about and marked on your map, so you still have to do some traveling. This system provides the perfect balance between exploring and saving time. For those of you who still like to walk from place to place you can, and there are always places to explore and discover, in fact, there are so many landmarks, shrines, and dungeons hidden all over Cyrodiil that we doubt anyone will find them all for a while. The game world in Oblivion changes from night to day as well, and the weather changes as well from sun to rain to snow to overcast. This adds to the realistic feel of the gameplay more than players realize, and the date is always kept track of in your stats.

As I said, the game is open-ended. This also includes character creation. You can pick from one of 10 races, all of which have special abilities. This is not to say that only Orcs will make good Warriors, far from. You can pick any race and any class, and make it your own. You can even create a custom class with the attributes you specifically want. Now, some races have magic or physical bonuses that make them better suited to be a mage or warrior, but not so much so that it precludes you from using them for a completely different purpose. You can also pick a “birthsign,” which is basically the astrological symbol you were born under. These birthsigns also add attribute bonuses based on the once you choose. Here is another one of my tips, though, while you can pick any race to be any class, make sure you pick a class that you are going to stick with. If you are going to play a mostly fighter class, make sure to pick the warrior job. This is because in order to level up in the game, you have to wait until you have upped all your major skills in order to actually level your character’s main level. In other words, if you are a mage class, you will have to cast enough healing, illusion, and damage spells to make your illusion, damage, and healing skill increase. Only then can you sleep in a bed and raise your level. So, if you pick a mage class and play a mostly melee style of play, it will take you much longer to level up.

Speaking of leveling up, the game generates enemies based on your level. This cane be both a blessing and a curse. Some quests will require you to obtain items from enemies that will just not exist for you yet. For instance, if you steal from the fighter’s guild and you are a member of the guild as well, you will be required to collect 20 bear pelts as penance. Now, this happened to be at level 7, and since bears do not appear until you hit level 12, I had to revert to a much earlier save. This brings me to another tip. Save often in Oblivion. By often I mean keep about four saves going and space them about an hour apart each. Trust me, you will find yourself reloading old save games more than once, and it helps if you only have to repeat about an hour or so.

Interacting with the NPC characters in the world of Tamriel is pretty simple. Keep in mind that all NPCs in the game will react to you based on your character’s reputation. If you are a thief who is also evil, you will not get favorable responses to any of your questions. You may say “so what,” but most of the quests in this game are based on NPC interaction, and if they do not like you prepare to spend thousands of dollars in gold bribing them to get the information you need. The NPC characters will also talk to each other as you walk around town and if you overhead a topic that you have not heard mentioned before, it will be added to your list of questions to ask other NPCs. This is a very impressive function, and sometimes you will get new quests based on these overheard topics.
