The player interface is more or less the same as it was in Morrowind. You can play in third or first person mode, but the third person mode is pretty much useless when it comes to actual combat and interacting with NPCs. In first person mode it is extremely easy to steal things by accident, in third person mode it is almost a guarantee. Combat sequences are not as hard to play in third person mode, but I warn you, if there are friendly NPCs around you then do not use third person mode. When you engage in combat with friendly NPCs assisting you it is almost impossible not to hit them by accident at least a few times. If you hit them too many times, they will turn on you, which is a royal pain. Here is another one of my tips, if your friend turns on you, hold down block and talk to them, you will yield to them and they will stop hitting you. Trust me, you are going to have to use this at least once, so remember it.

The inventory and map interface is pretty easy to get the hang of. After an hour or so you will be able to navigate your spells, items, stats, and the map with ease. Both the list of items and spells can be broken up into smaller groups, this makes it much easier to find what you are looking for considering at times you will have upwards of 100 items on you. There is also a quick access feature using the 8 directions of the D-pad. You can set any spell, weapon, armor, potion – just about anything you can use or equip – to one of the 8 directions of the D-pad. Surprisingly, accessing the diagonally assigned quick access choices is not hard, it works pretty flawlessly.

As for the graphics in the game, they are incredible. Read on before you disagree with me. If you take into account the scope and size of the game and the resources used to produce them, the graphics are amazing. I say that because if you turn on the game and expect to be blown away with the graphics you will be a bit disappointed. They are good, but they will not knock your socks off right out of the gate. You need to take into account the true size and scope of Oblivion, then you will realize that Bethesda’s graphic accomplishment is nothing short of incredible.

The sound in Oblivion is one of my favorite aspects of the game. In Morrowind there was always this ambient classical guitar type music playing at all non-combat times. This tradition is continues in Oblivion. It adds so much to the game you may find yourself craving some playtime just to hear the comforting sounds of that ambient theme mixed with the sound of rain falling. The voiceovers for the NPC characters are a big repetitive, not what they actually say, but the voices. You will recognize the 9 or 10 used throughout the game.
