Resistance: Fall Of Man, Insomniac’s Playstation 3 launch game, is a first person shooter which is rapidly becoming the game to own on launch day. The game itself is a first person shooter, and Insomniac has made the claim that the game will support 40 simultaneous players in the online modes. Of course, this would be fantastic if it goes off without a hitch, but to test that aspect of the game, we here at GR will have to wait until launch day. I can, however, tell you all about the rest of the game, including the clever use of the PS3 SixAxis tilt pad, and more. Take note, we know Insomniac had a previous FPS game called disruptor, but since that was so long ago and Insomniac was not even really the same company then, we will call this Insomniac’s “first.” The game takes place a few years after World War II, in 1951, although the game has story elements that allude to events that have taken place much earlier than that. In RFoM, players will be plopped right down in the middle of Russia, which mysteriously closed its borders in 1930 (the game takes place along a fictitious timeline with elements borrowed from real life). It turns out that Russia closed their borders to deal with a rather serious incursion of alien life forms. Well, in true video game fashion, the communists were unable to contain the aliens, and by 1951 or so, almost all of Europe is under the thumb of a race called the Chimera. Not content to stop at the English Channel, England prepares for a massive invasion as the Chimera get ready to strike Great Britain. You play Nathan Hale, a wayward US soldier whose platoon was hit by a Chimera patrol. The Chimera leave you for dead after infecting you with an alien virus, but being Nathan Hale, you are able to get away unscathed. Being the good little soldier that you are you request to be sent back into action immediately. From this point on the game tells your story through the eyes of a researcher called Rachel Parker. The next four days (in-game) will be action-packed, that is for sure. Keep in mind that Insomniac has plans to make the Resistance series an on-going, epic tale, with more than just this video game to tell the whole “Resistance” story. This is why, throughout the game, you will find yourself wondering why the storyline reveals or alludes to an event or person that never ends up being relevant to this particular “Resistance” game. The story mainly shows up via in-game cut scenes and cinematics, as well as the standard newspaper clippings and “paper slivers on the floor” type mechanism. |
