For those US football (soccer) fans among you, you know it is hard enough to find a good match on the TV, much less a good console football game here in the ‘States. What makes it even worse is that we know both Japan and Europe get to play a great football game called Winning 11/Pro Evolution Soccer. These games hardly make it to America, and when they do, they usually only come for one system, two if we get lucky. Well, it seems Konami finally aims to change all that with this console generation. They have decided to release a version of the classic football franchise on the Xbox360 here in the US, and not only that, but include an online mode to boot. Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 is here, and I’m here to tell you know if it was worth the wait or not. Of course, you cannot mention console soccer without including EA’s ridiculously popular FIFA series. EA spends tons of money every year promoting and creating FIFA, and in terms of presentation, there is no other game that comes close. The EA series also has more licensed teams and stadium. Along with a soundtrack filled with the year’s popular music and the flashy menus that you can navigate while playing mini-games, EA’s FIFA almost always takes the cake for presentation. Game play is another issue entirely, though. There is a reason that the game play, options, and Master League franchise mode have no changed for years in Winning Eleven. Konami knows not to screw with a winning formula too much. The game is, hands down, the best playing soccer video game around. This is a compliment but it is also a complaint – since the game play did not have that much work to undergo, it is a shame that Konami did not take the time to improve the presentation side of the game much; especially considering this year was the first that the game was available for play on Xbox Live. In the graphics department, it pains me to report that the game looks only slightly better than a Playstation 2 version of the game running through component cables. The players models, crowd, and lighting have all been tweaked, but they still are hardly top notch HD quality. The notable exception is the cut scenes where the player’s faces are shown up close. |
