Atari Officially Pulls Out Of E3 > |
2009/05/13 10:34:05: Posted by DM | |
Atari has officially pulled out of next month's E3 Expo. This comes after last week's announcement that Ghostbusters, one of Atari's biggest titles for 2009, would be published by Sony in the UK, becoming a Playstation exclusive for a time in Europe. This is not he smartest move, in our opinion, as Atari finally has a decent game lineup for the first time in a long time, and now they will not be promoting it? Not the best idea. Then again, old Sony boy Phil Harrison is now at the head of Atari, so a close Sony relationship is not surprising.

E3 is the U.S. Sony exclusivity in Europe. To think that P. Harrison's former affiliation with Sony would cause him to do any harm to the possibility of this game selling well and thus hurting the company is ridiculous fanboy speculation.

Is this article about Atari pulling out of E3 or Sony buying exclusivity of Ghostbusters in Europe? The title hints at the former, but the jibberish on this site points towards the latter.
@ Victus, how would the Sony exclusivity harm the possibility of the game selling well? Maybe I'm just not reading your post correctly =/
It is possible that Phil's history at Sony could have influenced this move with Ghostbusters. Sony had to have compensated Atari in some ways to make up for the lost sales on the other consoles, so I don't think this harmed Atari at all.
Connections in the industry happen all the time. Look at what happened with EA and Bioware, or just recently MS picking up BigPark studios, a company that Don Mattrick help start.
Not saying that this proves what happened between Sony and Atari was Phil's doing, but it does happen in the industry.

Basically, what I'm saying is that one way or another Atari is going to do what they can to make money. Whether it's selling exclusivity rights to Sony or advertising their game @ E3, if it is fiscally responsible, Atari will do what is in the best interest of the company. It's not like this game won't be advertised, critiqued and speculated to death before it's released. Though it'd be cool for E3 attendees to get a hands on, the size of the Ghostbusters franchise is advertising enough.
I honestly don't think P Harrison's affilation has anything to do with Atari's absence from E3.

Oh yeah I agree. Sorry I didn't understand your post there.Isn't Phil the top dog at Atari? If so, he could have made the choice to drop out of E3, but I honestly think that was a move to save money. It cost millions of dollars to have a booth at E3, so it's a good way to save some cash. I also agree that Atari isn't going to do anything that won't make/save them as much money.
