Topspin 2

The gameplay in Topspin 2 is more or less unchanged from the original Topspin game. Now, that is not to say that there are noticeable differences, things have certainly been added and tweaked. What I mean is the core gameplay is more or less the same as it was last time around – and that is a good thing, for sure. The basic shots are still there, the top spin shot, the slice, the regular swing, and the lob. One thing to mention is that the lob shot in this game can get a bit annoying if you are playing on the far side of the court. You pretty much have to be perfectly lined up to hit a lob back and it is way too easy to miss or overhit. Hopefully it will get addressed in a patch.

Beyond that there is not much more we can say about Topspin that would be of much use to you. The game is going to be exactly what you expect it to be, and if you have played the original Topspin before, playing this should be like slipping into an old shoe. Let’s get to the mode by mode shall we.

Exhibition mode is where you and up to three other players can play on your local Xbox360. You can play mixed sex here if you really want, but the power difference does affect the game so you may not want to. You can change the settings as you need to, and you can pick any court you want.

Tournament mode is pretty much what you would expect. You can set up any kind of tournament that you want with up to 8 human players. You can pick either singles or doubles, of course, and you can set all the match options. Beyond that though, it is pretty bland.

Career mode is your basic single player story mode. One thing to note about this mode is that it has an extensive character creation sequence. When I say extensive I mean extensive. There are so many facial and other options that towards the end you just want to get on with the tennis already. I am all for super customization, but this seems like pandering at parts. You can set so many facial features that if you play around with it long enough you will be able to replicate anyone you know in real life just like police facial software. No joke. After you are done creating you character you will be able to work your way through the world map, alternating training sessions with matches. The training sessions are annoying at times, but in general they are fairly easy. The matches on the other hand can get downright difficult (and long). This mode will keep you busy for a while.
