Timeshift has been a long time coming, and when I first heard about the game, like many others I thought it was just another run of the mill FPS. Fortunately, that was over a year ago, and the developer has had enough time to tweak the game to make it more than just a budget shooter. Unfortunately, the game is being released at one of the busiest times for the FPS genre in history. The market is literally swamped with FPS games, almost one a week, and some of them are just fantastic. Timeshift cannot quite keep up with the leaders, but that does not mean the game is not good in its own right. Most games these days that have any chance of sticking out have some sort of added gimmick or hook. Timeshift is no exception. The basic premise behind Timeshift, as the name implies, is the ability to control the very fabric of time itself. The game does not necessarily provide any revolutionary abilities to the player though, and most of the timeshfting powers have been seen in previous FPS games, although under different guises, of course (bullet-time, etc). The game puts players in the role of an anonymous scientist who was working on a secret project sometime in the current year. Apparently, one of the other scientists working on the project decided life would be much better if he used one of the suits to go back in time and make himself supreme leader of, well, everything. Of course, being the good person that you are, you quickly don the “beta” Timeshift suit, which has some added safety and military enhancements, and proceed to follow the evil scientist through time. Do not expect much more in the way of story, this is about all you will get, even if you finish the single player game. The suit, as I said, provides you with the ability to manipulate time. Although this sounds like a grand thing, the developers have boiled it down to three rather run-of-the-mill abilities. You can stop time, slow time, and reverse time. You can uses these powers to shoot rockets right out of the air or even walk up to enemy, grab his weapon, and leave him in the lurch. As I said though, once the novelty wears off, it just boils down to “bullet-time” all over again. |
