I cannot conclude this review without mentioning another fantastic feature of Boom Blox, and that is the multiplayer mode. Up to four players can duke it out, most of the time taking turns so that four Wiimote controls are not needed. Each person makes their throws and attempts to amass the highest amount of points by knocking out the giant point blocks set before them. The best way to do this is to search for the weakest spot in the structure and trigger a chain reaction before another player does. If you are lucky, you will knock half or all of the blocks down. Just like in billiards though, you may just end up setting up a perfect scenario for the next player. It makes for a ton of fun whether you have two human players, or all four human players battling it out. Of course, this is just one of the multiplayer modes, you can select other scenarios that involve multiplayer grabbing or shooting games as well. Finally, believe it not, there is one more feature of Boom Blox to check out once you have exhausted all other avenues of play – a very involved level editor! As you complete stages in the single player mode, you will unlock different parts that you can use in the stage builder mode. To begin, I suggest you load up pre-existing levels, and edit them. This will not only help you get a feel for how to use the stage editor, but it will also give you some insight into how the structures are built in Boom Blox, and just how to make them challenging but not impossible. You can even scale the blocks to different heights and widths, and then copy and paste them to your heart’s content. You can then jump in and out of play mode in order to test your ideas fairly easily. Finally, you can even trade levels you feel are exception using the WiiConnect 24 online service. Boom Blox is one of the best puzzle games I have ever played, not just on the Wii but overall. With its well done physics and unique concept, you are getting a bargain paying for this title. While it is one of the more expensive Wii games, it is still $20USD or so less than a PS3 or Xbox360 game. Boom Blox not only has a significant number of game play modes that will keep you busy as a single player for days, the multiplayer modes make for a ridiculous amount of replay value. Once you also factor in the stage editor and the ability to share the maps and play them over the internet, you have a title that may, theoretically, remain fresh for months. Add to this the fact that EA will certainly be supporting the title for a while to come, and you really cannot say no to this one. Boom Blox will satisfy anyone who decides to pick it up, and I recommend that anyone who owns a Wii does just that. |
