Tenchu Z

The graphics are mediocre in Tenchu, but they more than serve their purpose. Do not expect Ninja Gaiden Sigma level aesthetics, but they are not needed to be honest. The game play is the focus of games like Tenchu Z. Combine this with the slightly awkward camera control and you may have a frustrating moment or two, but it fixes itself fairly quickly. Throw in knife slashing and slicing sounds and some good blood spurting audio and you have more than enough to support the game play.

One of the last things that From Software added in order to help Tenchu Z over the hump is a co-op mode that can be used via Xbox Live or System Link. Of course, the lag we suffered about half the time made the online play hard, but when the play was lag-free, it was surprisingly entertaining. The co-op play supports voice chat and you and your fellow ninjas must battle enemies that appear throughout the map. It may not add much to the game, but it does bring enough to make the game worth checking out.

Tenchu Z is not what I would have liked to see for the franchise’s first next-gen outing, but then again, the series has been in a steady decline for a while now, unfortunately. The game has always had all the right ingredients to make a serious action stealth adventure, but the developers just cannot seem to ever get them to gel correctly. This game is a definite rent-only unless you know exactly what you are getting into, that means purchase for die-hard Tenchu fans only.
