Konami has confirmed that it will be reissuing several Playstation 2 classic games due to high demand. They will be budget priced, but they are full, proper, reissues. The games include Suikoden Tactics, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (the GR favorite of the franchise). Soon these will be joined by Silent Hill 2, 3 (the best), and 4, The games will likely be priced at around 19.99. The Playstation 2 is still going strong, it seems.

Well, it seems that Sony is not dropping the price on the PS3. The big announcement today is that the Playstation 2 is now just $99.99 USD. Of course, this is great news for those cannot just yet afford a next-gen setup. For those waiting to get a PS3, though, more disappointment. Sony really needs to lower the PS3 price now as well for an all-around sales boost.

Update: It seems the price drop will not affect European regions. We have no idea what this is about, but it looks like Sony is back to the old tradition of screwing Europeans. More info when we have it.

The President of Sanzaru Games, the developer of Secret Agent Clank, has revealed that the studio is putting the finishing touches on a Playstation 2 version of the game. The spy will be bringing his "Clank-Fu" to the aging Sony console on May 26, 2009. The game looks pretty decent, but then again, if you have played it once already on PSP, there is not much reason to play again.

According to Sony sources, Wipeout Pulse has been in development for the Playstation 2 for some time now. According to the same source, though, it may no longer see release on the aging Sony console. The PS2 version of the game has been rumored for a while, but Sony refused to comment on it yet again.

"Of course, we need to make a business decision that there will be sufficient demand for a particular product, but we see franchises such as SingStar and Buzz still selling very well - for example SingStar Abba which launched in December proved very successful."

Everyone knows by now that Sony's PS2 console is still selling ridiculously well, despite being more than ten years old. This is providing a very nice financial security blanket for the electronics giant, especially since the PS3 is having its ups and downs, to say the least. Yesterday, Sony announced that the PS2 had hit 50 million console sales in North America, quite a milestone. Gamasutra spoke with John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, to get his opinion on the news. The current strategy at Sony is to support the PS2 well into 2010, and may be beyond. The only way to kill the PS2 business, according to Sony, is to stop supporting it.

According to a Neilsen PDF study from last month that we just dug up, the most played console of 2008 turned out to be the Playstation 2. Sony's aging console has one more victory to add to its list, it seems, and the inexpensive games and hardware made it the most enjoyed system of 2008, overall.

In Europe, now developers do now have to submit PS2 games for content approval. This effectively makes the Sony console an "open platform." This is going to further smaller and independent game developers, says Sony, and there is going to be a new global approval system implemented to accommodate the indie devs. Before, every region had a separate submission area for game approval. Now, indie devs simply submit their idea to a single website for approval. On top of this, Sony will now allow developers to publish with third-party publishers. What does all this mean in real-world practice? Basically, just like XNA and the Xbox Live Arcade, and the WiiWare channel, we will see smaller, indie-style games, being developed for PS2 and the PSN. Good to hear.
