As is the trend these days, the single player mode only lasts for about 6 or 7 hours. But the game does have a multiplayer mode, which consists of a deathmatch mode, and a team deathmatch mode. So many modes, it is overwhelming, I know. To be honest, it really matters little because the multiplayer mode in Stranglehold is a mess. Not only does every player have access to their special powers, but sometimes players can even enter Tequila Time. How this works in a multiplayer environment still escapes my grasp, but let’s just say when you activate your TT, you can more or less kill everyone else before it wears off, but if they are using grenades you are dead in the water. The precision aiming is out as well since your enemies move in real time so getting a bead on them is near-impossible. In fact, the only way to put anything up on the board in multi mode is to grab the shotgun or the assault rifle, and spray and pray. I cannot even tell you the multi mode is necessarily bad, it just reminds me of a heap of features lumped together without any real consideration as to what they mean to each other. While there are a ton of mindless shooters on the market, Stranglehold really takes it to another level. Does the game get tedious at points? Sure, but not enough so to make you want to quit. The melodramatic story with the classic Woo touches will captivate you long enough to finish the game, and you will find yourself saying “ohhh sh*t, that HAD to hurt!” more than once. Midway did a fine job, and I fully expect another Woo game to be released in the next few years. |
