Sony Expects Game Losses To Double >
2007/10/29 9:23:47: Posted by DM
Sony has announced that it expects its game division to double their losses this fiscal year. This is a leap from about 50 Billion Yen to over 100. This is due solely to the PS3's mediocre performance. Sony needs to step up their PS3 game to PS2 levels to make the numbers.

they should have completely discontinued production on ps2 and made no more ps2 games.

this would practically force people to upgrade like microsoft does.

Sony is selling the PS3 at what $300 but it costs like $600 to make one (correct me if am wrong), do they really think they'll make money. They could gain the money back if they sell more console and have a greater instill base but with the Wii and XBox 360 above it, its damn near impossible.

If Sony continues this way they may not even be a 'PS4'.

all they have to do is halt price cuts up to when they start making some money on the console.

Response to zwandaba:

You are 100% correct, my friend!

There are a lot of reliable sources saying that the PS3 and PSP will be the last hardware gaming systems we see from Sony.

The reason for that is strictly because of financial losses. Sony has been taking out HUGE loans with high-interest rates that are not desirable...Sony has been forced to sell large amounts of Stock to the public in order to generate cash...and Sony has even been forced to close production facilities, lay-off workers, sell factories, and even fire people--IN JAPAN!!!

Firing people in Japan is NOT something that happens unless there is a situation of desperation, because in Japan when you are hired, you are part of a "lifetime employment" culture. So, that shows just how bad a situation Sony is in financially because of the Playstation 3.

The fact is, Sony's "Trojan Horse" Blu-ray plan has failed in a HUGE way. People don't buy game systems to play Blu-ray discs, like they did with the PS2 and DVD. If the PS3 would have cost $200 less and used an HD-DVD drive or a DVD drive, then it would have done a LOT better. In fact, if HD-DVD would have been used, PS3 games would have access to 30GB of disc space in each game, rather than 25GB in each game, because the current standard for HD-DVD is 30GB dual-layer, while Blu-ray is still using the standard of 25GB single-layer for the overwhelming majority of products.

Sony simply cannot afford to take losses on hardware like that. That is the same position Sega was in when they finally made the decision to produce only software. If Sony were to create only games, then they wouldn't have to deal with the HUGE hardware losses, and they could make a lot more money making games for Xbox, PC, and Nintendo platforms.

Maybe they need to come out with a Wii-mote for the PS2 like Nintendo did with the Gamecube I mean Wii :p

JK. Sony's going to have to continue to bleed money in order to compete with the 360 and Wii. Consumers have spoken with thier wallets. The Wii and PS3 are prime examples of why it doesnt matter what you put in the box. Consumers are the ones who determine value not these corporations. That expalins why last geenration technology is beating new cutting edge technology. The PS3 is selling slower than the Gamecube or Dreamcast ever did. Ouch!!!!!

u guys could say what you want.. but If I buy a PS3 today, I won't have to buy one 10 years from now,.. oops make that nine.. in 5 when the new DVD's come out holding 100GB I'll put my money on it that consoles specs would be that it plays DVD -HD-DVD- Blu-ray- and 100GBDVD, which are now going through some testing by sharp & another company in India is developing one also, it'll be just in time for the NXT-GENERATION Systems. I see PS3 living the life that Gamecube did last Gen.

for that to happen blue, they need to have a lackluster next year, if they are still last in month by month sales for the better part of next year, then things will not be as good as some PSfans would like many to balieve, but i think they will definately get better
Written by B1ueBurneR on 2007/10/30

Yeah things will definitely get better, they will be selling 40GB models at a lost of probably another $200, but most people will pick it up for the blu-ray of course. And it’s a bargain so we’ll see another spike in sales but it’s going to take more than just holiday’s spikes for Sony to keep 3rd party dev’s convinced not to Jump ship with exclusive titles.

Talking about titles, so far since August MS and Nitty titles are selling more than PS3 titles even the exclusive titles, which all sucked so far except for two. This holiday season what does the new ps3 owners have to forward to? Ubisoft is considering delaying its PS3 titles to 2008. So I guess you’re right things will get better like it did for the GameCube every holiday season.
