The online lobby setup is room-based. When you join a room you can vote for one of seven tracks, and each track has a pre-set vehicle that everyone must use, and it is always set randomly. Even if you are setting up your own race, you still cannot chose which tracks or cars are being voted on. To top it all off, you cannot stop the race countdown clock, so if you start a room and no one joins, you will begin your own solo adventure in 60 seconds. Why Codemasters decided to ignore all of the pre-set online racing conventions I am not sure, but hopefully with the next DiRT game they will nail it down. Is DiRT the perfect racer? No, not at all, but it is certainly a major step forward in rally racing for the masses. The sheer number of ways to play the game, on top of the number of cars and the types of vehicles ranging from buggies to hatchbacks to garbage trucks make for an experience that never gets old. Throw in the difficulty level adjustment on the fly, and you have a game that you can play for a month and never get tired. The game is plagued by a frame rate problem, and still suffers from the age-old Colin McRae “floating car syndrome,” but if you can get past it, you will break into an extremely fun and satisfying experience. The online experience is not the traditional racing experience, but that may be on purpose. I can recommend a purchase for this game to any gamer that enjoys a good racer. The game will keep you busy for a while, and by the time you are finished with it, there may even be a downloadable update with new cars and tracks. |
