Resistance: Fall Of Man Preview

Labeled With  resistance fall o man insomniac playstation 3

While we have no doubt that future Resistance titles will be set all over Europe, and even though the Chimera crisis began in Russia, this game takes place in England. Gamers will be able to instantly recognize some of the more famous landmarks, even with all the battle scarring and war-ravaged areas. The game does not get monotonous though as later levels become increasingly foreign as the Chimera influence on the cities becomes more and more apparently. Architecture, vehicles, and even Chimera technology become part of the landscape by the time you complete all your missions (Half Life 2 fans will notice the similarities to the Citadel when they see the “node tower” in RFoM).

Let me get the one truly unique FPS aspect of RFoM out of the way before we continue. The SixAxis’ tilt control system is used in one of the most innovative ways I have seen yet in a PS3 title. When enemies grab you from behind or from your front, you need to shake the PS3 pad all about to get the Chimera to let go. It even works well enough to be called intuitive. Now that we have gotten that out of the way I can say that the rest of RFoM plays like a run of the mill FPS game.

Keep in mind folks that when I say “plays like a run of the mill FPS game,” this is not necessarily a bad thing – in fact, when it comes to RFoM, it is more of a relief. Insomniac does not have much experience when it comes to FPS games, and for Resistance to be as easily playable and well designed as it is, is impressive indeed. The game has all the features that an FPS game should have: maps that are conducive to the type of objective you are completing, clever and innovative weapon design (especially impressive because they do so doing 1950’s technology mostly), and enemy A.I. that actually works.

The enemy A.I. in RFoM is something that is not even being touted by Insomniac at all, which is a shame because the intelligence level of the CPU almost makes the bots feel human, and that is saying a lot for a first person shooter. The actions of the opponents are determined by type of creature that they are. Any of the lesser beasts, the more animalistic creatures, will act more single minded and more determined (once you set them off, that is). The soldiers, on the other hand, make for some rather challenging opponents. The soldiers will use cover, and I mean anything, not just the same pre-programmed duck and cover spot, like some other FPS games. Soldiers will also just shove their gun up and fire off a few rounds, hoping to wing you in the process, if not kill you. The enemies are tough, but they are even more of a pain up close, so we advise you make all your mistakes early on.
