Resistance: Fall Of Man Preview

The weapon design in Resistance is also one of the more memorable high points in recent FPS game history. One of the best weapons in the game is the Chimeran Auger, which is basically a shotgun which fires a shell filled with lightning. Yes, we said a lightning shotgun. Did I mention that lightning can shoot through about 70-80% of walls? Or did I mention that the alternate fire mode of the Auger deploys an energy shield which is strong enough to deflect most any bombardment. All of this is true, and this is just a taste of the innovation that has gone in to the weapon design in RFoM.

The feature that many of you care about most, let’s face it, is the graphics. The Playstation 3 is supposed to be the end-all, be-all of graphical console endowment. Well, I am here to tell you that RFoM does indeed look great. The lighting blooms just right, the motion has been captured down to every last finger, and the textures all look like the real life objects were crushed up, digitized, and spit back out on screen. Of course, that still leaves the frame rate to be discussed. Keep in mind, the copy of RFoM I used in this preview was an unfinished copy, and I played it on a debug Playstation 3 unit. Whether or not either of these factors made a difference, I am not sure, but I can say without a doubt that the frame rate in Resistance does leave something to be desired. It is certainly not running at anywhere near 60FPS, it is more along the lines of 20-30, with FPS slowdown apparent when the bigger on-screen events transpire. Don’t get me wrong though, 60FPS happens at times. We do sincerely hope that Insomniac is able to tweak the frame rate settings over the next two weeks or so because the game really deserves at least a steady 30FPS rate. On this to take note of is that in RFoM, the enemies have access to the exactly same arsenal as you, and they use it in the same style. What I mean by this is that enemies will take the Auger and fry you through a wall without thinking about it, just like you would have done to the Chimera. There will be no Chimera-only weapons or Chimera-only techniques. At least, this is according to the Sony representative I was given to talk to while playing.

For those of you who like to play co-op games, then you will be happy to hear that Resistance will feature a full co-op mode that spans the entire game. Not only that but I was told that the game does not just throw more enemies at you and your partner in co-op mode. Apparently, the title not only adjusts the enemy count, but it also changes the weapon load out of the Chimera enemies and at times it even changes their attack strategies. I am skeptical of course because I have heard promises like this before, but if any game does it, RFoM more than likely does. I was also told that the game will not feature an online co-op mode unfortunately – co-op is only available via split-screen mode in local play.

Yes, the game also has vehicles for you vehicular manslaughter types out there. You all know who you are, the ones who do not get down from the Warthog the entire match of Halo 2. While there are only three vehicle types in the game, a jeep analog, a flying machine, and a third machine that I was not able to preview, the ones I tried are easy to use, co-op friendly, and fun, so that is one less thing to worry about.

Well, I had better wrap this preview up since it is turning into a review fast. Resistance: Fall Of Man will likely be the favorite of the Playstation 3’s launch here in the USA. Personally, I am a Genji fan myself, and was disappointed that the game was being overshadowed by Resistance. After previewing RFoM thoroughly though, I have no doubt as to why Genji 2 is being overshadowed – RfoM is a great game, plain and simple. Is Resistance going to be worth buying a PS3 for? Well, you will have to wait for my full review for us both to find out, but for now, pre-order is the only word you should be focusing on
