BT aims to be the information communications technology in Ireland, and Nintendo is teaming up with them to allow free wi-fi access to everyone in the country kinda like here in the USA. Gamers will be able to obtain access at hotels, coffee shops, payphones, and major videogame retail stores. Nintendo is sure on the right track for wi-fi users.

No wonder nintendo didn't want to do online games before, they didn't want the user to be burdened with isp fees and such.
