I didn't even know that the PS1 was still selling. To me the run stopped when the PS2 came out. If people was still buying it they must have been some broke a55 people. As for me I gave the system to my dog to burry it in the backyard years ago. I mean look how desperate Sony is by trying to milk a zombie. That system has been dead in my books for along time. Whats next is Sony going to say that they stop production on 8 tracks. Come on.

Having worked in retail before (7 years), I can say that a good three years after the PS2 launched that the PS1 sold well considering the new technology. It was a good run. At least they will support their older systems unlike Microsoft.

Stinky Pete..The same people who bought the PS1 after the release of the PS2 probably still play music on a 8 track. Those are people who 1) don't know nothing about technology or 2) Are very cheap and hard up with cash. But a true gamer, you know the one who wait online in the rain or snow. Put that system to rest along time ago. Also you bring up how microsoft doesn't support the Xbox. But last I look you still could get the same games for that system like the ones on the PS2 and xbox360. Your a little premature with that prediction.

Ric Hard...your painting a very narrow view of this...

Sony is different and Unique from other games console maker...the backward compatibility was something not thought of before and how we demand this features to be the norm.

Yes PS1 games and hardware remained strong well after the PS2 arrived. Reason being is that PS2 has B/C, so software still on the rise and all those NEW and PREVIOUS gamers who have not played the PS1 GEMS titles on the PS1 could do it on the PS2. The PS1 games did not cost alot either so works out well.

As for the hardware...well take in to account the worldwide regions, where people do not have the disposable cash for such tech. Also do not forget how well the PS1 is for younger toy market where games are cheap and hardware was cheap, perfect you average mother or father to purchase for their young children. Also it was widely known that compact PS1 selling strong because people where complaining about the size of the original PS1 and that it was not great when taking it to a friends house for some gaming. This was a gaming revolution and thing like that where a new thing. Seems like a fad now if you think about it...but it was turning points of the gaming industry and how it hit the mainstream.

cyrix.. Yes I understand but my statement wasn't towards the games. Like you said we can play that on the PS2. My statement is against the milking they did with still making the system. Your right if I want to play PS1 gems, I could do that on the PS2. So why would people even need to buy the first system. They should had burried it along time ago. If the second system was able to do that already.

Cyrix I missed your second point by mistake. To answer that I feel if people can't afford the new system there are alot of good used systems out there. So I feel sony didn't have to keep the system in production. The demand for that system isn't really high anymore for the company to continue that way.

Read my 4th paragraph...

Summary of it:

Take into account Worldwide Regions...different Economies - some have less disposable cash. So appeals very well of people or family strapped for cash.

PS1 was a cash cow for the Toy market...ideal family present for the younger children.. Cheap Hardware - Cheap Software - Massive catalogue of games for young audience.

The PS1 Compact Console was a new thing...and sold very well....reason being becuase Sony actually listened to the disconcerning sounds form the consumer who complained that the PS1 was too big to pack and take it to a friends hows... These where issues of new gaming revolution and gamer demands.

Hope that helps...there are more reasons, but those are ones I remember.

;)

p.s. I doubt they would be making a system if there wasnt demand for it. Look at PS2...support is still strong and will remian strong...I mean you can sell a PS2 very easily, is has literally 6700+ games. Software cost well nothing...you an pick up great games for nothing.

Also they could release PS2 in different colours say PINK, RED, BLUE, YELLOW and wham they could revive PS2 slightly. It a simple transition PS2 takes place of PS1 and PS3 is the new console. So it caters very well. I can go on but I keep it short.

PS2 for cheaper/casual gamer and family end of the market. (kinda in Revo terrority)

PS3 for the Gamers/Gadget Enthusiast/General Consumer and Rich white folks with money to spend.

HAving two consoles on the market is only a good thing and support for both is strong and still selling very well.

Actually why would Sony want to rush to the PS3...the PS2 selling strong and at profit, with the best games we've seen ever. GoW, SOTC, RE4, GT4, FF and more.

Point taken. Maybe in the beginning when the PS2 came out. There was still a transaction moment that need to take place and games was still being made.. But not 4 to 5 years later. I still feel after all this time there was no need for the system to be produced. If someone couldn't afford the PS2 there was still good PS1 systems out there to get real cheap.

I know that if I had kids right now in the 4-10 age group, they'd have a PS1. I hardly touch the one I have now (it's in our visitors room for the neices and nephews), but I can see why it would sell. Great points Cyrix.

Look at what you are saying Stinky Pete. That you have a PS1 that you hardly touch. Exactly! I wasn't saying that the games are not fun but to continue making the system all these years doesn't make sense. It's not like the system is still in great demand. EXAMPLE: I guarantee you that if I want to get my hands on a new or used Dreamcast,NES or even master system it wouldn't be that hard to do, and production for all those systems stopped along time ago. Why? because there either to many made and they still sit on store shelves or people trade in the old stuff for new. So please tell me why did Sony need to continue production on something that faded long ago.
