Starbreeze has released 16 new shots of their Xbox360 title The Darkness. The game, which has changed publishing hands already, looks pretty good, not as good as the first video we saw, but still ok. Hopefullly the Starbreeze gameplay will hold up. Click on the news title for the screens, and be warned, they are big, 1080p.

If it looks THIS good in stills rest assured it will look good during gameplay as well.

The texture work is amazing.

1080p? More than likely these are PS3 screenshots then :P

You have to love the power of the Xbox 360!! :)
Written by optaviusx on 2006/04/29

On the website they came from they were 720p, but when you save them to your pc and zoom they look flawless at 1080p.

Well these same shots were in a magazine before where the devs confirmed them to be 360 shots, the game is also coming to the ps3 as well though. The site where these pictures came from though say they are 360 shots.

Not many if any of the ps3's games will be 1080p, unless the game is graphically underwhelming. The processor can handle it, but if the game has enough graphical bells and whistles the rsx will choke under the pressure. Now matter how many things the cpu takes care of the gpu will always be stuck with the usual stressful graphics intensive tasks.

Interestingly, Lair will be 1080p (along with a handful of PS3 launch titles). And we all know how underwhelming Lair looks.
Written by Itaintrite on 2006/04/30

Hmm, actually, these are 1080p screenshots.

So yeah, I do believe these are PS3 screenshots.

I'm guessing that means either this game's graphics is very "underwhelming", allowing the PS3 to be able to run it at 1080p,or the PS3 is just more capable than you believe opta.
Written by Guerrilla on 2006/04/30

hmm, actually, this gears of war screenshot has a resolution of 2560x1440, and knowing that an gow is 360 exclusive its either running in that resolution with a stable on the 360 or the screenshot is just for promotional purposes just like these darkness shots (which arent exactly 1080p either if you look at the resolution) and Itaintrite is just an uninformed ignorant fanboy. choose what fits you best...
Written by optaviusx on 2006/04/30

itaintrite the ps3 wont be running any games at 1080p unless its a graphical joke. Its not more capable than I thought it was. The rsx is a 7800GTX... I know wbat it can and cannot do. It wont be running this game at 1080p. Also Itain do you have photoshop of any kind? Go into photoshop please and open one of these images saved to your pc what is the size? 1280x768, but it just so happens that when you zoom in it also looks good at the much higher resolution.

Is it out of the realm of possibility that developers wanted people to get a better look at the game itself so they released images that can be scaled to higher resolutions without losing image quality?

Go into photoshop after saving these to your pc and it wont be 1080p. As a matter of fact not a SINGLE one of these are 1080p EVEN when you zoom in which proves my point that they just made the images natively a higher resolution so you can get a better look at the game. All these images are 1920x1153 and others 1920x1200 (the ps3 runs games at those resolutions? Nope. 1080p resolution last I checked is 1920x1080 only 1 image is even close to that and its the one where the creature is sawing at the guys neck. Which is 1920x1078.

There are 2560x1900+ images and 1080p resolution images of elder scrolls and fight night round 3 as well. Again the ps3's gpu just isn't capable of it. Hell it doesn't even have the type of video memory bandwidth to sustain its decent rendering performance with graphical features such as softshadows or 4XAA at a 1080p resolution. 48GB/s of memory bandwidth as opposed to the 360's 256GB/s Like I said it isn't happening.

Untold Legends is 720p and look at how crappy that game looks... If THAT game isn't 1080p why would one like this be? Bia3 will be 720p, so will warhawk, so will motorstorm, heavenly sword, killzone (for sure is 720p alot of pressure on that game to live up to the video shown)

LOL itain lair will be in 1080p? Wanna bet on that? Also there has never been any ingame footage of lair released so lets wait before we assume that game will look like that screen released and play in 1080p (it wont) Remember I said it lair will be 720p.

Anyway name 1 ps3 launch title that will be in 1080p so when its finally released you'll see that it isn't?
Written by Guerrilla on 2006/04/30

*claps in agreement*
Written by silverwolf on 2006/04/30

How can anyone relate the resolution of a screenshot to be directly correlated to the resolution on a game is beyond me

BTW textures look nice and crip. Just got my OXM and all these images are on the disk as well.
Written by shamn (1) on 2006/04/30

Er...they're not 1080p. They're 1920x1200. 1200 != 1080.
Written by peeping tom (2) on 2006/04/30

I don't give a fuck what resolution the shots are in, the game looks great either way...but Opta is right about the PS3 shit. And even if he was wrong, do any of you have a TV that could take advantage of it?
Written by optaviusx on 2006/05/01

Oh yea... nice one smarty pants I'm an xbox fanboy because I point out that the shots are 360 shots.. I'm the one that sent DM the link to the webpage they were on and they clearly stated they were 360 shots. Or maybe you're mad I'm not buying what sony said about the ps3.. dual 1080p 120 fps?

I'm sorry, but I wont fall into the hype that surrounds the ps3. Everything I've said about the ps3 so far has been dead on. I said it was a 7800GTX aka nv47 aka G70. I said it had 24 pixel pipelines 8 vertex. I said don't be surprised if no ps3 games run at 1080p unless the game is a joke in the graphics department. Untold Legends is confirmed to be 720p/1080i waiting on the rest to do the same. Also don't expect true HDR + AA simultaneously in ps3 titles.

Both the 360 and the ps3's cpu are dominated by mainstream pc processors especially in single threaded game code. A multi-threaded engine is what will bring their performance up to par with what a mid-range to high end cpu can do.

I'm sorry, perhaps I'm stupid, but how can a screen from a game be anything but "P" (as in progressive). The p means every line of resolution is drawn every refresh - These are still images, there is no refresh so of course every line of resolution is displayed.

Do you think they captured these from video of the game being played? Not likely. The only thing that matters is that the art style looks good, the atmospheric elements are there and the detail is high. Now we have to wait for video to see what it really looks (and plays) like.

Why constantly bring up PS3 in an XBox 360 game discussion?

*Edited: Removed trolling.*

optaviusx, you're wrong. Untold Legends IS 1080p, that's why it looks as crappy as it does.
Written by anti-optaviusx 2.0 (107) on 2006/05/01

Hahaa, Smarty Pants ... I second that.

Man, PS3 is gonna rock your world with true 1080p. Not that 720p crap that xbox is putting out. PS3 have two HDMI outputs to support future upgrade to 4k (2160p) displays. Woo, can wait for next-gen to come along.
