Next-Gen Havok Engine TO Show At GDC >
2007/03/01 17:00:55: Posted by DM
The next gen edition of the Havok game engine, version 4.5, will be shown at this year's Game Developer's Conference. This is the engine featured in such games as F.E.A.R., and Crackdown, as well as Dead Rising and Oblivion in places. It may be the only engine that gives Unreal a run for the money, with its enphasis on physic (Unreal emphasises graphics more than physics).

the havok engine is only a physics engine, it isnt a complete game engine like the ue3. its just an addon for game engines, and can only output physics, so theres no competition between the ue3 and havok. ;)

i cant wait to see what the next gen havok engine does. condemned, dead rising, oblivion, FEAR, crackdown, etc all are running on the havok 3 or 3.5 engine. havok 4.5 should be an impressive improvement

ah DM, Havok is a not even a game engine you can't make a game in it just get the physics animations out of it, plus there are 2 different Engines that i'd prefare over over U3 the Instincts engine and CryENGINE 2. There are no released games ot yet even using havok 4, i wonder will the devs currently using 4 update to 4.5.

i think the key difference between havok 4 and havok 4.5 would be the Havok behaviour technology in 4.5.

Havok behaviour is what they will be mainly showing at the GDC.

as for other engines, i dont think i would pick the instincts (as in Far Cry1?) over UE3. the difference in capabilities is pretty staggering.

as for the CryENGINE2, it's a vastly powerful engine that has many capabilities. however the libraries are not as mature as UE3 and thus makes the engine a lot harder to work with.

The New Instincts Engine i'm talking about is not a Crytex engine its a totaly different company called Instincts Limited, there so new they haven't even got a website up yet but i'm telling you there engine is damn impressive, they have been working on it for a few years so far. there also starting up there own studio soon.
