Reggie Fils-Aime Calls Out Phil Harrison At GDC >
2007/03/09 9:21:30: Posted by DM
A funny thing happened at the GDC ysterday, apparently. At the Nintendo speech, someone shouted "Kick his ass and take his name!”

“Who?” answered Reggie in mid-autograph.

“Phil Harrison, front row!” Sure enough, there was Philly Harry (President, Sony Worldwide Studios), right in the front row. In classic Reggie style, without skipping a beat, Reggie quipped “Some would say we’ve already done that.” Oh boy! Them's thar fightin' words!

PS2 still outselling the Wii. 2 years, the Wii will be dead. Can't say the same for the PS3 or 360.

People say that Sony rep's are arrogant.
Written by Stalkholm on 2007/03/09

I like this new aggressive stand that Nintendo is taking. First they call Sony on coping their Mii idea, now this? Things are looking up.

'sides, I think they've earned the right to be a little cocky. They took crap for five years about their "Purple Lunch-box", about not having strong third party support, about being a niche system and they're turning that all around. Three years ago I was convinced that we were going to see the next Metroid for the Xbox 360, but they've really managed to turn things around.

(Sorry, had to break this up into two posts. Apparently it's too long...)

Stick to it Nintendo, us fanboys 've got your back.

P.S. VaeVictus: Of course Sony sold more PS2s than Nintendo sold Wiis. The reason for that is that Nintendo could only produce so many. Sony has had five years to produce a hell of a lot of PS2s, they're able to saturate the market with them; where as the Wii has only been in production for less than a year (I think) meaning that the Wii had very limited quantities. You can't sell ten million Wii if there are only one million that exist. But I think there's something to be said for selling *all* the units that they produced. As for not being around in two years: Just think about how kick ass a Legacy of Kain game *could* be on the Wii. As long as imaginative people are making the games the Wii will survive.

i can't believe you think the wii will be dead in 2 years, just look at the games announced for the wii and ps3, the wii games look far more impressive than all the ps3 games, all they have so far is graphics, and if people only cared about graphics then the games industry would of never started.

if anything the ps3 is more similar to the gamecube than the wii or 360.
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/03/09

How many new ideas can their really be before the lackluster graphics get old? With the exception of Zelda and Wii sports, there really isn't a game out that sells the system. This is very comparable to the situation Sony is in right now. A couple of solid titles and not much else to boast about. The difference is that the Wii is $250.00 US. As for 3rd party support, I just don't see it being a major coup for Nintendo. Multi console users will go with the more polished versions of multiplatform games (360/PS3). Having played a Wii, I don't find anything all that great about the controller. Of all the games I played, Wii bowling was the most fun. That really isn't saying much.
Written by Nemesis IX on 2007/03/09

well at least the wii has fun what has the ps3 got?
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/03/09

As for Fils-Aime's comment. I know it was probably done tongue in cheek and at the spur of the moment. If not, he is counting his chickens before they hatch. 4 months into the life of the two newer consoles (one next gen, one not so much) is no time to declare victory. I can't see how Nintendo is having production problems. It's not like the Wii is cutting edge new technology.

No one has to agree with my opinion that the Wii will be dead in 2 years. It is only my opinion. I feel as though the ideas will dry up. Keeping that in mind, I also know Nintendo's past w/ delaying their 1st party titles which are the true selling points for any of their consoles. How long before another Zelda? After Mario and Metroid, how long will people have to wait for another iteration? I just think dev's will run out of ideas for making the Wii innovative any longer. But that is only my opinion.

Nemesis, do you own a PS3? Even better, what kind of games do you like? Also, notice I've made sure to insert the obligatory "my opinion" reference. The PS3 does have fun. It isn't what it will be very soon, but Resistance and now Motorstorm* have kept me entertained (along with Gears of War and Crackdown) for the past couple of months.

ps. Stalkholm, Legacy of Kain on the 360 or PS3 would be much more to my liking. I prefer using a standard controller. I can't help it, I am a graphics whore and Crystal Dynamics has done well w/ those games graphically and gameplay wise in the past. The story telling is top notch.

It's funny that Fils Aime would say that so soon, and after he's had his ass handed to him for ten years. I give Nintendo credit though. I really didn't see them doing this well after the GAmecube and N64 did so poorly. The adopted a business model that works. I just wonder after dev's figure out how to squeeze even more out of the PS3 and 360 and games continue to improve in all facets how Nintendo will fair beyond the next 2 years.

I think my reasoning is fairly logical. It may not turn out to be correct, but logical.
Written by Nemesis IX on 2007/03/09

i guess the same could be said for metal gear and devil may cry, as for running out of ideas if a dev can't think up another idea to use the Wiimote than they don't deserve to be making games. on the topic i think he's good for nintendo he always speaks the truth and can be over zealous which isn't a bad thing.

in my opinion
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/03/09

The same "what" could be said for metal gear and devil may cry? Sorry, didn't get the gist of what you were trying to say.

Dev's running out of ideas, how many ideas (and how much capital) are 3 party dev's going to put into the Wii?

EDIT "3rd party" instead of 3 party.
Written by Nemesis IX on 2007/03/09

i like all types of game i love maxed out graphics but i would still pick fun and gameplay over graphics, i've had every console since the nes but there is something i don't like about the ps3, i don't know what it is but everytime i wish to buy it something changes my mind, i know i will get before the year is out but i'm still not convinced.

the iterations of metal gear and devil may cry come as frequent as mario and zelda is what i meant.
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/03/09

Difference in time periods is that there have always seemed to be more coming to the 360 and PS3. B/c of their shared #'s more games will go to those two consoles that simply can't be put on the Wii. Unreal engine is en vogue now, dev's say it can't be used on the Wii. It's really a matter of semantics. Installed base.

Unreal engine in vogue...I meant to put a "for example" in front of that. These are only MY opinions, not words spun by me with something else I've read that I am trying to portray as fact. Just my opinion on things. Not directed at you Nemesis, I just wanted to clarify that for everyone else. :-)
Written by Nemesis IX on 2007/03/09

i fairly sure the wii can support all engine but it won't be able to support al its features at one time, like the images of mario released yesterday it was using frenel shaders but it wouldn't be able to use that and another format of lighting such as hdr as where the ps3 and 360 could.

sorry for the spelling errors.

i hope the wii survives past a few years because the more competition the better games we will get.
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/03/09

I agree about competition. I just think the Wii is not a long term solution for Nintendo. How will people feel in 2-3 years if/when Nintendo releases a more powerful system when the 360 and PS3 still have 3-4 more years on the market? I really think the more that HD tv's permeate the market, the more people want that graphical mmmph, if you know what I mean. Once Halo 3 launches, I think the Wii will see a huge decline in interest. People of course will buy that game in the millions. People will also be curious as to what Sony has to respond with. Nintendo not so much. MS and Sony are the trendsetters and are direct competitors. With XBL and Home, Nintendo will likely fall further behind the pack in online gaming and that hurts them.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2007/03/09

in my opinion the wii is just to nintendo pay the investement on the failed gamecube , earn good cash and then perhaps lauch a real next gen machine that will compete directly in terms of graphics with the ps3 and xbox_360.
Written by VaeVictus on 2007/03/09

By trendsetters, I don't mean innovation. I mean that they are pushing technology, and I think that interests people greatly. What will Gears of War 2 look like? What about God of War 3? Halo 3? Heavenly Sword? MGS4? There isn't much else that can be seen or done visually with the Wii.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2007/03/09

Untill there , keep moving that wii mote.

or in a last solution , nintendo gets out of the console industry ,to focus in their handlets(ds) and producting games to other platforms.

Untill there . probably 20million wiis will be shiped by nintendo.
Written by Stalkholm on 2007/03/09

I didn't take the time to read all the posts I've missed, but I can speak to a few points. Let's talk about those graphics: I submit that a good game is good regardless of how nice it looks. Case in point: I still love Super Mario 64, Chrono Trigger, hell Mega Man 2 still kicks my ass in awesome ways. At their time they were all cutting edge technology, but they haven't aged visually. That being said, they're still lots of fun to play and they're still great games. I think that if the developers make games that are solid to play then the graphics won't make too huge of a difference. What's more I think that the popularity of XBLA and Nintendo's VC point to a change in trends, more towards fun and less towards perfection.

New ideas. Yeah, there's a chance that they'll run out, or there's the chance that they'll flow like water. Let's look at some of Nintendo's other hardware gimmicks: The analogue control stick, the joy pad, the rumble pack, the second touch screen. Thus far everything has started off as "What the hell do we do with *this*!?" and ended with the hardware becoming nearly industry standard. Nintendo takes risks, but so far the risks have paid off pretty well.

Finally there's the sad stigma of the Wii being underpowered. True, the Wii may not be able to process a hundred thousand gigaflops of data in ten seconds but I still think we're vastly underestimating the power of the system. Everyone makes it sound like the Wii is capable of displaying a whopping fifteen sprites on screen at a time and has never heard of Anti-alaising. In all honestly the GameCube was the most powerful system last-gen, not by a lot but by enough and the Wii is more powerful than the GameCube. Now if that means that the best possible graphics we're going to see coming out of the Wii is *better* than what we saw in

RE4, or God of War or Halo 2 then I'm pretty damn content. Besides, it's not the hardware that makes a game pretty, it's the developers working within the confines of the hardware. Now thanks to similar architecture to the GameCube developers practially have a five year head-start on making pretty, kick ass games for the Wii. Five years from now they'll look even better.

No, the Wii can't out perform the PS3 or 360; but a Honda Civic can't outrun a Porsche either. Still, which sells better?

Dammit, one more thing I forgot: Eidos *does* do a pretty awesome job of the LoK games (My favorite is SR2 personally, it's just smooth.) but let's look at the potential: We can have graphics better than Defiance with no hindrance to the story telling at all. I personally would love to swing my Reaver with gay abandon at dozens of vampire hunters. And I think you'll be safe with looking for a conventional controller: A lot of people feel the same way as you, Vae, so it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Intec or (God forbid) Pelican come out with some sort of 360/PS3 controller clone. All in due time.

If super mario galaxy did not sell one million in Japan and one millon in the US, then wii is another Gamecube. Why, becasue mario sunshine didn't reach these goals, so if galaxy didn't meet the 1 millon mark in those two regions, most people still don't buy into the controller thing to play games other than wii sport or mini-games.
Written by Neo Fruity Loops on 2007/03/09

The Wii is selling well because their was huge pent up demand for the past 2 years for a viable Nintendo console.

Whereas, if you own a PS2, there are STILL aaa titles coming out for it like God of War 2. There is less incentive to upgrade ro PS3 at this point..But, want to play a aaa Nintendo game.. not on GC you have to upgrade to Wii... sii the difference.

""In all honestly the GameCube was the most powerful system last-gen""" by Stalkholm

--------------------------------------------

Im afraid to say that you are wrong ,friend.

Techicaly speaking ,the xbox was the most powerfull console of the last gen.

Look at multli-platforms games and 1st party and you will see that almost always xbox wins.
Written by Gaara's Bane on 2007/03/09

lol reggie is crazy . ` i would so have loved to hear what happened after that. probably the best rep the 3 game companies have.
Written by nock on 2007/03/12

with nearly 5 Million consoles sold already, and every console flying off shelves as soon as they're received by retailers...I doubt seriously the Wii will be dead in a few years...there will be too many consoles in homes for 3rd party developers to ignore. People said the same thing about the DS when it was released, and look how well its doing now.
