Just needs to use punctuation. I am sure he means "N E thing" as in anything. Really dude, it is only one additional letter though.

Hopefully someone will start to utilize Blu Ray for gaming soon.

As far as this article goes, I think someone should tell Phil Harrison that the rate of On-Demand HDTV from things like Cable Boxes is growing at a much master rate than Blu-ray or HD-DVD...disc formats like those will not achieve the market size that DVD did anytime soon--not for years, because that is how long it will take the price to drop. By then, it will be time for the next videogame system generation to be released. It might be a benefit to Sony and/or Microsoft at that point in time...but not this generation, because the potential Blu-ray market is too small at this point in time, as well as the near future.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2007/03/13

While its true that blu ray userbase been growing well , Sony should not forget that the games come first , phil can you please , avoid relying on the blu ray factor to justify a "console"?( Play games)

@@@ Utp

Their are trying to acelarate this process , with the enclusion of the blu ray on the ps3.

It helps , it realy helps , seing stand alone blu ray player selling at more than $600 , makes the ps3 a good starting point in this tecnhology.

5 year from now i do belive that blu ray standalones will be around $100.

Things like On-Demand DVR devices, and similar devices with hard drives that let consumers download their favorite shows and watch them in high definition for free, whenever they want, as long as they are monthy subscribers are what continues to grow at the fastes rate. The reason for this is because online gaming is growing at such a fast rate. If someone is subscribing to online gaming through a company like Comcast or Verizon, then why not just get a high definition DVR and your phone service through them, too? That is what everyone is doing now, because when you subscribe to a larger package like that, then you get a better deal with lower costs.

And many people who only subscribe to high-speed Internet access still love it that the Xbox 360 can download both high-definition movies and high-definition TV shows.

I mean, one thing that seriously bothers owners of Blu-ray movies is that some of their favorite movies are only on HD-DVD. Similarly, it bothers owners of HD-DVD players that there are certain movies only released for Blu-ray. But with products like an Xbox 360 or an On-Demand DVR, you can watch ALL of those movies in HD any time you want! It is like having a movie library at your disposal...and the way the Xbox 360 lets you download awesome TV shows for just a couple bucks is amazing!

Phil is telling the truth that the market size is growing each day for Blu-ray...if they only sold one player each day, then he would technically be telling the truth...but the fact is, the market is increasing at a VERY small rate...and it is now fully acknowledged throughout the industry that Sony made a BIG mistake by using Blu-ray for gaming, because Blu-ray adds about $250 to the cost of EVERY Playstation 3, but the benefits associated with the extra space are only seen in less than 1% of games.

So, Sony's greed cost them this time, just like in the past with other products, like when Sony had a chance to use low-cost MP3 technology, but instead chose to make their own sort of digital compression, which failed miserably.

Response to MAKAVELLI:

I think there is a chance you could be 100% correct about the pricing of Blu-ray five years from now. I do think that HD-DVD will reach the key pricpoints of $299, $199, $149, $129, and $99 quite a while before Blu-ray, though. When the price gets to $200 or less, then that is when the overwhelming majority of sales will occur. So, it doesn't really matter what is sold until that point is reached, because the winner will not be determined until those price points are reached.

I think the key thing is that five years from now, or even two years from now, it will simply be too late for the PS3 to see any benefits from Blu-ray. Sure, the price point may be lowered by quite a bit, says, 2,3, or 4 years from now...but the damage from low initial sales, and consequently very few exclusive third-party games, will have been done, because the Wii and Xbox 360 will have built up such a huge sales lead that PS3 will be even more of a distant third than it is now.

Time will tell, though.

By the way, MAKAVELI, I would once again like to thank you for sticking up for me when VaeVictus ripped on me using words that mature people, such as you and I, immediately interpreted as profane words. Thank you, my friend.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2007/03/13

@@@ UTP

No thanks needed , Pal. I know you would do the same for me.

I still wondering If sony release the ps3 with a fast dvd9 drive....$299 ,humm... In another hand ,the fact of blu ray disc and recoders being so expensive , makes the piracy process a lot harder in the case of the ps3, It would be more 2 or 3 years untill we start seing massification of blu ray games copys.

Alternatively , hankers will try to "atack" the ps3 os to permit the copy of the games/programs trough usb cables "pc-ps3 hard disk".

Sony knows it only a mather of time untill hankers crak the ps3, and in this , the blu ray is being a great sony friend , in the way its retarding the "fraudulent process".

This articale is about the storage capacity advantage of the BD over DVD9... you can never enough storage, Nintendo learned this the hard way with N64.
Written by Wil on 2007/03/13

If you notice, English is obviously not his first language because a lot of what he says is in the wrong order. "It would be more 2 or 3 years" instead of "It would be 2 or 3 more years". So, 'retarding' may actually be 'slowing down'.. from the way I understand the post.

Anyways, I agree with UTP is the fact that this 'next gen format war' isn't going to grow to be that big of a deal until the price drops... and even then I don't think we need these new formats, what with holo-disks and the increasing popularity of downloadable movie and TV services.
Written by NUTTSACK on 2007/03/13

Phil Harrison said Blue-Ray will help ensure Sony's success at what? Selling Blue-Ray movies or videogames? IMHO Blue-Ray has nothing to do with games. Extra capacity aside, what does it have to do with a gaming machine? How will the extra cost of Blue-Ray that consumers have to pay for benefit PS3 owners when it comes to games? I dont mind having to swap a disc every now and then. So give me another reason that Blue-Ray was a smart decision by Sony.
Written by Game_Demon on 2007/03/13

BD will eventually beat DVD. DVD officially surpassed VHS by the end of 2006, when BD was already there. Does that make DVD unsuccessful? Of course not. DVD had a slow start, BD is selling faster than DVD. By 2008 or 2009 EVERYTHING will be HD (except DVDs and Nintendo Wiis). That's when BD will start selling like hot bread. VOD (video on demand) may drive video clubs to oblivion but it won't stop people buying their favorite movies. And HD-dvd has no more reason to exist.

BD for ps3 costs sony 250$ ? Your outta your mind (and so is the analyst who made that analysis). Aside from the R&D costs the bd drive of the ps3 doens't cost more than 100-120$ (to sony anyway). In return it gives you the much needed space for the next 10 years. By then there will be games in 2 or more BDs.

Response to Game_Demon:

Blu-ray will NEVER beat DVD in terms of market shar size...EVER!!! Only in the world of Sony's 4D gaming where the 4th dimension is the one talked about in the Twilight Zone--ya know, the dimension of Imagination!

VHS and DVD used the same sort of TV's. But even on those same TV's you could see HUGE differences...analog vs digital, 320x224 vs 640x480. See my point???

With Blu-ray vs DVD, both use MPEG-2 as their primary coding format. Both use digital technology. And although Blu-ray have a native resolution of 1080p, the DVDs will be upconverted to a higher resolution on most players sold nowadays.

And when you hear people say things like, "everything will be in HD in a couple years." They are just pointing out that the signals will be broadcast in digital high-definition. That does NOT mean your standard definition TV sets will not work anymore; it just means you will need to get a different type of antenna or tuner in order to receive the signal. From that point on, it will take the digital high-def signal, and then downconvert it on your inexpensive SDTV, which will still be sold at all the retail stores at a very low price...much lower than HDTVs.

And on those kind of low-cost TV sets there is NO reason to spend extra cash on anything other than a DVD, especially when the movie selection of the Blu-ray is so small compared to DVD. When you look at the reviews of Blu-ray movies, a lot of times they point out that even when watched on an HDTV, an upconverted DVD looks nearly identical to the Blu-ray.

Ya seeeeeeeee, that is what happens when both of the formats use 15 year old MPEG-2 technology! That is why HD-DVD movies look so much better--they use the VC-1 technology that was designed to compete with the much newer MPEG-4...which is something that only a couple Blu-ray discs use, because MPEG-4 often requires over 50GB of space because it is very inefficient in terms of compression!

Summary: Blu-ray will NEVER have a market share larger than DVD, or even close to DVD...and Blu-ray will be lucky if it even beats HD-DVD over the next five years...and even if Blu-ray defeated HD-DVD, things that are MUCH better than Blu-ray, such as holodisc, and other forms of technology will be used with SED in ways that allow resolutions of over 3,000 lines to be displayed will be used!

@ UTP

it will be a while before you see DVR take place of ANY Physical discs.. simply because of New Release movies like Spider man 3 any other movies comming.. u simply cant get new movies on demand because the movie industry created a huge and profitable market wby selling DVD's after Box Office... soon Blu ray will take that Spot.. and HD DVD will disappear

Has Sony ever created a propriety format that was successful?
Written by Bearsfan13 on 2007/03/13

Just a quick note. There will be sub $200 HD-DV players on the market by the end of the year. The format sign a bunch of manufacturers in China few month or two ago. Once those players hit say goodbye to Blu-ray.

Written by maddcoder on 2007/03/13

@@@@ Ic204

Yes , the DAT.

Is the most popular format in professional music recording studios , it was created to replace the old 1/2 inch tape recorder.

It is also one of the best formats used in mastering studios. It goes up to 48khz of sound resolution , audiophiles and Sound Engeniers discibe it as having a more soft and natural sound against CD's.
Written by Itaintrite on 2007/03/13

"There will be sub $200 HD-DV players on the market by the end of the year."

By the end of the year, there will be at least 4million PS3s owned all over the world. Blu-ray players will be priced at around $300. Game over? Looks like it for HD-DVD.

"That is why HD-DVD movies look so much better--they use the VC-1 technology that was designed to compete with the much newer MPEG-4..."

Are you saying that Blu-ray CAN'T use VC-1? Get your facts right. There are already BR with VC-1 codec out on the market.

Summary? You're such a biased fanboy it makes me laugh.
Written by MAKAVELI on 2007/03/13

@@@@ Itaintrite

what makes you think that blu ray player will cost $300 in the end of year????

Also UTP just said that VC-1 is better than MPEG 2 , dont put words in his mouth.
Written by sino on 2007/03/13

Does it make sense if your tv shows look better than your movie collection.Any HD formats(720p,1080i,1080p) will not go away becasue they will replace 480i eventually.Basically I'm saying DVD is a transitional format, it's going to go away faster than the VHS.
