Woolworth Dropping HD-DVD From Sales Floor, Toshiba Responds >
2008/01/28 9:58:08: Posted by DM
It seems that HD-DVD just keeps getting beat on more and more lately. Now, in the latest debacle, Woolworth stores have announced that they will no longer sell HD-DVD format movies come March. Woolworth is apparenlty confident that the PS3 will and is pushing the Blu-Ray format over the egde to success. Toshiba, purveyors and co-creators of the HD-DVD format, are admitedly disappointed, as you can read here.

Response to dudeman:

lol...last christmas the "Professional Industry Analysts," were saying that the HD-DVD format was #1 by a huge margin and that Blu-ray never stood a chance...and it is still early in the "race."

Nevertheless, a year has passed, and we know the following things:

(1) HD-DVD players average 3.5 movies sold per player.

(2) Blu-ray players average less than 1 movie sold per player (mainly because 40% of PS3 owners don't even know the system can play Blu-ray movies, according to a recent survey).

(3) Even though the attachment ratio of HD-DVD is so much higher per unit than Blu-ray, the bottom line is that there are so many more Blu-ray systems out there that it adds up to an extremly big Blu-ray advantage that the majority of movie studios are now starting to support in an exclusive way.

(4) it is a surprise that Blu-ray is receiving this sort of support. After all, Warner Bros. is the company that invented a disc that was compatible with both formats, yet Warner Bros. now supports only Blu-ray. This is likely because the Blu-ray Disc Association--which Sony is a part of--paid Warner Bros $500 million dollars.

(5) The bottom line is, as long as Paramount, Universal, Dreamworks, Nickelodean, and MTV only support HD-DVD, it is absolutely 100% impossible for Blu-ray to be considered "a winner."

After all, HD-DVD holds the record for the top selling movie--Transformers from Paramount. And look at all the awesome Boxed Sets of TV shows and cool movies that are only on HD-DVD. Blu-ray cannot even attempt to say it is "the winner," if it doesn't hold that particular sales record.

(6) It appears that the "format war," is still going to last for quite a while, even though Blu-ray has a lot of momentum. It may seem as though Blu-ray is now destined to win, but the fact is that as long as HD-DVD holds the trump cards of Paramount, Universal, Nickelodean, Dreamworks, and MTV, then it is IMPOSSIBLE for Blu-ray to win.

(7) Microsoft, if you truly care about consumers, then one way you can show it is to release a Blu-ray attachment for the Xbox 360, just as you said might eventually happen. That way, Xbox 360 owners can have ALL forms of content: HD-DVD, Blu-ray, and On-Demand.

Releasing a Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox 360 would actually be a BIG advantage for the Xbox 360, because PS3 owners will ALWAYS be limited to Blu-ray, since Sony is one of the nine inventors of the Blu-ray format, and Sony is not a supporter of On-Demand content. PS3 owners will be missing out on HD-DVD and On-Demand services that Xbox 360 owners enjoy. Using the Blu-ray AND HD-DVD advertising campaign would have a LOT of potential, and it represents something Sony couldn't match.

I found out that Woolworth will still be selling HD-DVD hardware and software online...just not in their actual stores.

So, this isn't really that big of a deal, considering that Woolworth isn't exactly known for selling technology like this anyways.

Woolworth is a large retailer of music and movies. Dumping HD-DVD is a good move on their part before they get suck with inventory they can't sell.

I just went into my local WalMart to exchange a BluRay movie that I received as a gift but I already owned a copy it. I ended up getting store credit because they only had 3 Blu-Ray titles still in stock. Shelves were empty. They did have a ton of HD-DVD discs in stock as no one was buying them.
