MS Claims GTA IV On 360 Has Exclusive MP, Rockstar Responds >
2008/02/13 8:22:25: Posted by DM
For those who missed this latest little bit of GTA IV drama, here is the summation. First, in the latest Larry Hyrb (Major Nelson) podcast, the MS Senior VP of Interactive Entertainment, Don Mattrick, claimed that GTA IV has multiplayer elements that are exclusive to the Xbox360. THis upset many PS3 fans who already were up in arms because there is no episodic content announced for PS3 (yet). Rockstar has now responded, of course claiming that both versions will feature multiplayer support, and that the comments made by Mattrick are inaccurate. Stay tuned for more as it unfolds.

MS lying?! no way...
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/02/13

dudeman,

Microsoft wasn't lying...and from Mattrick's point of view he was telling the truth. From Rockstar's point of view (that is trying to be nice to both versions), it was technically an inaccurate statement. Here are the reasons why:

(1) The Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 is the only console that will receive downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto 4. Microsoft paid $50 million for this exclusive content that involves two separate "Episodes," each with approximately 10 additional hours of gameplay.

(2) The Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 definitely DOES have exclusive multi-player options. That is the entire reason why Mr. Mattrick said so. In other words, the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 features "Multi-Player" gaming options, some of which are also on the Playstation 3 version, and some of which are exlusive to the Xbox 360 version.

(3) Rockstar was saying that Mr. Mattrick was incorrect because they thought he was saying that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 would be the only version to feature any form of Multi-Player option. Obviously that is not true. The fact is that the Playstation 3 version also will feature multi-player options...it's just that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 will feature a larger number of multi-player options, some of which are not found on the Playstation 3.

.....Now, everything is cleared up, and the pieces of the puzzle are aligned again.

sorry, i think i'm going to believe RockStar on this one...you know...since it is THEIR game.

dudeman,

Next-Gen confirmed this in an email I got about seven minutes ago.

Here are the FACTS:

(1) Playstation 3 owners were complaining when they heard Microsoft's employee, Don Mattrick say that the Xbox 360 had "Exclusive" Downloadable Content AND Multi-players options.

(2) The Playstation 3 owners made the MISTAKE of assuming that the Xbox 360 would have 100% Exclusive "Multi-Player Options" in the same way that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 actually DOES have 100% Exclusive "Downloadable Content" featuring two extra episodes that aren't found in the Playstation 3 version.

(3) Microsoft's employee, Don Matrick, used careless grammar in a way that allowed this to be MISUNDERSTOOD.

(4) The FACT is that BOTH the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 have "Multi-Player" gameplay options...you are 100% correct to believe Rockstar Games about this, becuase they made this FACT 100% clear.

(5) It has been made 100% clear that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 also has Exclusive "Multip-player" options that are NOT found in the Playstation 3 version. In other words, Rockstar Games is 100% correct that both versions have Multi-Player options; however, the Xbox 360 version has MORE multi-player options.

(6) Another way of saying it is, "The Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 is NOT the only version that supports Multi-Player gameplay options; however, the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 supports MORE multi-player gameplay options than the Playstation 3 version.

I'll have to wait and see i guess when the game comes out as far as which platform gets my money.
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/02/13

dudeman,

That is usually a good decision, for every game. In all honesty, though, I think it appears to be a 99% sure thing that the Xbox 360 version will be better than the Playstation 3 version, simply because of the extra Downloadable Content that will only be in the Xbox 360 version...and Microsoft has spent $50 million dollars just to get that content. It makes me wonder just what they have planned for the marketing of the Xbox 360 version.

The REAL question is will my xbox Red Ring before this game comes out. It HAS been acting funny lately. lol
Written by incoming00 on 2008/02/13

sure sucks downloading the extra content, then having your 360 crap out lol...
Written by CianMCL on 2008/02/13

its choice if a person owns a ps3 they get ps3 version and vica versa for the 360
Written by incoming00 on 2008/02/13

and lets stop the speculation... i believe the company making the game over anyone who makes podcasts/blogs. game comes out in two months. lets just wait and see...

FYI: GTA IV has multiplayer elements that are exclusive to the PS3.
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/02/14

Response to WithoutPrejudiceGamer:

Yeah, but considering that the exclusive features for the Playstation 3 version are "No Custom Soundtracks," and "No Ability to Chat Online While Playing," it is usually a good idea not to mention those exclusive features.

in-game xmb IS coming this year.
Written by Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex on 2008/02/15

Response to dudeman:

I'm not trying to be rude in any way...but, it's important to note that Sony said H.O.M.E. is coming "this year,"...several years in a row. But it still isn't here.

From a realistic point of view, there is a realistic chance that Sony won't see Custom Sountracks for the Playstation 3 this year. What's worse is that even if the PS3 does see custom sountracks for games, it doesn't operate the same as the Xbox 360. The PS3 games that use that feature would do so in a way that takes available power away from the software. The Xbox 360 hardware has Custom Soundtracks automatic for every game, which means it doesn't affect software performance at all. So, developers will still likely not use that feature in the PS3, since the Playstation 3 has a hard enough time keeping up with the Xbox 360 as it is.
Written by WithoutPrejudiceGamer on 2008/02/16

GTA usually has their own soundtracks. Personally I don't care for custom soundtracks being integrated into the console and game. That's what my stereo is for... and it's far more flexible and intuitive.
