Unfortunately, both the AI and the graphics suffer from some serious problems in Payback. Firstly, the AI not only seems to want to die, but they downright have a death wish. Enemies will actually move towards where you were shooting rather than away from. In fact some enemies may run right by you without firing, which makes killing them academic. Some enemies do try to melee you from behind, but after one punch, you will dispatch them without issue. This may all sound bad, but the piece du resistance is the magnetic grenades. I called the magnetic grenades because enemies seem to run towards the explosion, instead of away from. While this is certainly fun to watch, it does not make much sense. The graphics in Payback are pretty impressive, as long as you are standing still. Once you start moving, and bullets start flying, the game unfortunately turns into a bit of a flip book, with the frame rate dipping fairly low. This certainly is annoying when you are trying to zoom in on a terrorist, much less aim for the head. When the action gets extremely hectic, be prepared to pull some of your hair out, but at least playing the game on easy will prevent you from dying. You are given a fairly large selection of weapons in the game with which to create havoc. AK-47 rifles, grenade launchers, M-16 machine guns, gun emplacements, grenades, and the like are strewn throughout the map from level 2 on. This adds to the game’s number one asset, the excessive gore. The more weapons you have to decimate the enemy with, the more death animations you get to see, and the more the excitement level rises -- at least for a while. The game itself will not take long to finish. There are a few maps that will give you some trouble, and using the radar locator to find your next objective can be tedious. There is a decent amount of backtracking and waiting for the game to open up the next location. Combine that with the fact that enemies sometimes spawn behind you in areas that supposedly were clear, and you have a recipe for some difficult, nay frustrating, times. The game does provide both city and jungle map locations though, so there is at least a bit of scenery change. |
