The biggest change you will be treated to in GRAW is the technology. At your disposal you now have an array of technical marvels to help you plat out and plan your attacks. On most missions you will be able to utilize support vehicles like UAVs, Apache helos (that’s a helicopter for you non-military types), Bradley armored vehicles, and more. As you work your way through the missions, you will use to d-pad to control all of these elements at once. It sounds daunting I know, but once you get it down, after a few missions, it is not as hard as it sounds. This also brings us to the first drawback of GRAW, the support player AI. You basically command your 3 squadmates to go forward and flank street corners and whatnot, but the thing is, they don’t always listen. Many times you will find yourself cursing your squadmates for literally running into a hail of bullets because they like to stand up and shoot back when they are being attacked, even if you tell them not to. Is this a problem that makes the game uplayable? Not at all, but when you have to control your squad, a M1A1 Abrams tank, and an Apache helo all at once, it does get very frustrating.

One of the new features that Ubisoft is particularly proud of is the cross-com system. I can sum up what this is with one very familiar technology term. Cross-com is a fancy name for in-game picture-in-picture. You can see what your squadmates see in their HUD, and you can see what the vehicle or UAV scans with their instruments. It is less useful than you think it would be, in multiplayer I have the Cross-com window disabled totally since it blocks out about 1/8th of the tip left of the screen. It is a nifty feature for sure, less useful than cool though.

Now, let’s talk about graphics here for a minute. Overall, the graphic quality in GRAW is impressive. In fact, one of the first things you will notice about GRAW is the ridiculous draw distance. That means how far you can see head of you for those of you who are not familiar with game terminology. It there were no obstacles in the way I am quite confident you would be able to see clear across the entire map. It is truly impressive. The characters, vehicles, and buildings are all also very impressive, they look realistic and the textures look real as well. Especially take notice of the explosions. They look (and sound) so real that you will find yourself blowing up anything and everything just because it looks so damn good. Now, of course, it cannot all be good. There are two things that will stick out graphically when you play. The first is the ground. Any area that is not paved with asphalt looks bland. Bland as in if there is supposed to be grass on the ground most of it will be drawn with a flat texture. We expected more from Ubisoft, but if they had to trade off something to provide the quality of graphics for everything else then it can be forgiven. What cannot be forgiven, unfortunately, is the frame rate. I am sorry to report that at certain points when you have many enemies on screens at once and there is an explosion or anything of that sort, the frame rate literally drops to about 12 FPS. It does not happen often, but it happens enough that you will notice it. You can see this yourself when you are playing the first helicopter-based level. When the Xbox360 has to animate the spinning blades, the shadows it creates, and 18 enemies on the ground all at once, performance takes a hit. The FPS drops so much at one or two points that the level actually becomes harder to complete because of it. Here is a tip folks that I had to figure out to make life easier: switch to the thermal/night vision if the FPS drops too low, it will instantly kick it back up above 30.

The sound in the game is where the Xbox360 excels. The digital 5.1 sound in GRAW is some of the best I have seen on the Xbox360. Not to mention some of the loudest. As I mentioned earlier, explosions are loud and big, and they sound like “a garbage truck falling off the top of the Empire State building,” to borrow a phrase from Large Marge. The voice-overs are slightly less impressive, some sound like they were recorded at the last minute, but they are sufficient. The vehicle and weapon sounds are dead-on, with sniper rifles reverberating with every shot, and light machine guns with a perfect rat-a-tat-tat.
