As of now, it seems the DSi software is going to be region locked. This info comes from a statement made to CVG by a Nintendo rep. We assume this is to restrict gamers from sharing the new downloadable games that the DSi will play.

"DSi is region locked because DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself, and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region,"

Nintendo has taken the wraps off the new DS model, called the DSi. The unit features a built-in web browser, enabling users to download and store games right on the handheld. There will also be an online DSi shop, which allows users to purchase DSiWare. Microtransactions! There is also a .3 megapixel camera, as well as better audio capabilities. A slot for SD cards will allow the photos to be transferred to the Wii as well. Finally, the model comes with a slightly larger screen at 3.25 inches, and it is 12% thinner. Sounds like the all-around package. The unit goes on sale in Japan Nov 1, and in Europe in Spring 2009. No US dates announced yet.

Japanese papers, including NikkeiNet, reported over the weekend that Nintendo is planning to release a new, upgraded, version of their popular Nintendo DS handheld. The new model will feature a built-in camera, MP3 and music playback functionality, and an improved Wi-Fi antenna. The new DS price is being reported at under 20,000 Yen, which is around $189USD, and for now, it is only planned for release in Japan. More info will hopefully be available at the Nintendo press conference later in the week.

Pokemon Platinum has broken the first week DS sales records in Japan by far, with almost 1 million units sold in just two days. Despite going on sale a day later than the other games in this month's chart, the game sold 963,000 units over the weekend, it seems. For the rest of the game numbers, check the link.

The Nintendo DS still hangs on to the top spot in the hardware sales charts in Japan. For the week ending August 31, 2008, the Media Create numbers show the DS sold 56,439 units as compared to the PSP's 41,664 units. The DS is just a license to print money for Nintendo.

A leaked survey that has now been taken down by UGO, the original poster, apparently revealed details about the upcoming GTA Chinatown DS. If the servey is to be trusted, the game will feature an open-world environment, a mature storyline about, what else, a novice gang member who has delusions of grandeur. The game may also include offline multiplayer and co-op, 70 missions, and over 20 hours of gameplay. Rumor mill for now.

Nintendo has banded together with companies from Japan in order to actively pursue and file suit against importers of devices like the R4 for the Nintendo DS. These devices, mainly billed as movie players and homebrew software devices, can also be used to play downloaded images of Nintendo DS games. Big boys from Japan have also joined in, such as Capcom, SNK, Taito, Tecmo and Square Enix, to stem the flow of the devices to the USA and Japan.

According to IGN UK, sources say that Activision is planning a motion/tilt peripheral for the Nintendo DS. On top of that, it seems Nintendo themselves may eb planning to produce DS carts with accelerometer functionality, thus possibly negating Activision's peripheral. On top of even this, more sources are saying Nintendo may be planning to introduce a slimmed down, stripped down version of their DS Lite for under $100 dollars. The Nintendo rumors are flying pre-tomorrow's press conference. We will know the truth in less than 24 hours, folks.
