NPD December Numbers For LBP, MGS4, More > |
2009/01/21 11:16:39: Posted by DM | |
GamaSutra obtained some extended NPD sales data for the month of December, which showed some interesting figures. Little Big Planet, the Sony PS3 exclusive, has sold 611,000 units as of the end of 2008. Not anywhere near as much as Sony had hoped. Resistance 2, another big Sony exclusive, has sold 598,000 units as of the end of 2008. The original Resistance sold 757,000 units in its first 13 months, so the sequel is doing much better, it seems. Metal Gear Solid 4 has passed the 1 million mark, but that should surprise no one. Since its June launch, the game has sold more than 1,076,000 units. MGS4, by the way, was the first PS3 game to hit number 1 on the NPD total monthly charts, with sales of nearly 775,000 units. It now sells about 50,00 units per month. Gamasutra also has info on Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider: Underworld, which we know from the recent stock price crash, did not sell anywhere near as well as Ubisoft had hoped.

Disappointing, but hey, the developers gave it a shot. The games are worthy, they just don't have the same appeal as some other console exclusives. Sony should consider their marketing tactics as the games quality speaks for itself. Maybe the marketing (or lack thereof) is the problem?
EDIT: "as the games qualities each speak for themself""they just don't have the same appeal to gamers as other consoles exclusives"

Is anyone else surprised by R2's numbers as I am?

In what way are you surprised?

Once again GR fails in it's reporting. Kinda important to mention these figures are for the US only, isn't it? DM, you really gotta try a little harder to include important details like that, I mean it was right in the original linked article's title!

Ummm, he says it right there in his title "NPD"that right there should tell you it's US only.
@ Victus, well like we talked about before, sequels to IPs should do better, and with the amount of hype leading up to R2's launch I expected it to do better when you consider in the bigger install base and brand awareness built from R1.

I still don't think Sony advertised it enough. It is surprising in that regard to me as well. I had thought it would have moved more units. Oh well, what can you do?

@Madgunde, Why so Serious ?? :)
Written by madgunde on 2009/01/21
@XenosYou might know NPD is US only, but surely you can't expect everyone to know that. I certainly don't follow the numbers game enough to know.@B1ueBurneRIt just bugs me when someone repeats someone else's news and leaves out important details.
Written by Xenos on 2009/01/21
Sorry madgunde, I thought everyone knew NPD was US only, I've seen other articles do the same.

As an addendum, I'd like for all GR's members to refrain from ever referencing VG chartz all together.
Written by incoming00 on 2009/01/21
@Vae,i second that notion.
Written by madgunde on 2009/01/21
@XenosNo worries.@VaeVictusNone of us do that, do we? ;-) Is it OK to use their numbers and then just not mention where we got them from? :-D

I will reference whatever the hell I like. Not even NPD is accurate because they dont track 100% of the retailers in the US.VgChartz may be an estimate. But the bottom line is they seem to track things alot better then you or I do. I have actually seen the estimators there come real close to actual sales numbers frim the US, EU, and Japan. They also try to track other parts of the world.The only people who know how much they sold/shipped worldwide is Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.
Also NPD numbers leave out bundles from the actual "sales" of games.

@Pimp, before you reference it, make sure its correct :p

incoming00: LOL. So true. But dammit. What else do we have?
Written by incoming00 on 2009/01/21
you can quote me! PS3 will sell to 50mil this year, xbox 360 will sell to 200 mil this year, and the Wii will hit 1 billion!! plus, KZ2 will sell 10mil on launch, LBP will taker over as an MMO beating WoW only to be dethroned by the LBP:WoW expansion, Duke Nukem:Forever will be on the PS5 and the xbox 2160p in an self omni-projection console, and Bill Gates stops doing stupid girly dances at E3!

I know were not supposed to use VGChartz. But damn I just saw this. Sony is going to report a 1.7 Billion US dollar loss in net income for the past fiscal year. Thats another 500 million worse than originally estimated.hxxp://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=2851Does anybody think Sony still plans to drop the price on the PS3 this year? Doesnt look so good...
Written by Xenos on 2009/01/22
They have to drop the price Pimp, they really don't have much of a choice.

madgunde, i dont think that there is a site out there that gives world wide sales to a degree that negates suspicion.
