PS3 Made Intentionally Hard To Develop For, Says Hirai >
2009/03/02 15:13:46: Posted by DM
Kaz Hirai has been busy lately. Not only did he get named the head of a new Sony department today, but he also took the time to speak with the Official PS Magazine too. Hirai said in the interview that the PS3 was made intentionally difficult to develop for. This was done to stop potential developers from exploiting the system's full potential right out of the gate after launch. We all know that there is a natural progression of graphics and coding on any system as the developers learn new and better ways to program for the hardware, but intentionally trying to enhance this progression seems silly to us. Sony does not want users to be bored after one year of the supposed 10-year lifespan of the machine, says Kaz. We just don't understand some of Sony's moves these days, just give us games, and good ones at that, and let the market take its own course we say. If they did that, things would naturally fall into place, as they did with the Wii.

"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years?"

Holy crap this news is weeks old.

Look for better flamewar material DM, this is just................bad.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

LOL wow. ages old..

In Short, it's paying dividends. KZ2 as of now is the most impressive game engine in the console space. I'm pretty confident it will be that way until Sony 1up's themselves.
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

^ idiot is an idiot.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

Well. Xenos why don't you contribte to the thread instead of resorting in personal attacks. what does you thinking I am an idiot have to do with this topic?

PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

I don't think you're an idiot, I KNOW you're an idiot. There's a difference.

Also, KZ2 has nothing to do with this topic either. MT-FrameWork, CryEngine 2, and iD Tech 5 all easily match the KZ2 engine.

With how much you don't know about game development, you're the last troll that should be saying anything about an engine.

Actually throw in the RAGE engine as well, able to render hundreds of lights without the need of a deferred renderer.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

A system being hard to develop for translates to the hardware being used. obviously the PS3 tech is Exotic because of the Cell. when a company maximized on that you get a product like the KZ2 engine

I would really like to see some gameplay footage of this RAGE engine you praise. could you provide me a link so I can check it out?

Amazing lighting, beautiful textures, state of the art animations, sophfistcated AI. you honestly believe those console engines your named "easily" come close to all that?
Written by PimpDaddy on 2009/03/02

Sky: A system being harder to develop for to get the same results as another system being easier to develop for is stupid. If I were a software developer why would I want to go to some new type of programming method, that is harder, and therefore more time consuming and expensive to achieve the same results I could do on the other system?

You just dont get it.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

your = you
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

You know what? I was going to hold your hand and answer your stupid questions but I'd be wasting my time.

The difficulty (or ease) of developing on a system does not hinder nor slow down the amount of advancements or possibilities open with a system. It merely just means that you either go from good to great or you start with shit and eventually work your way up to great. The PSone was the easiest console to develop for on the 32-bit genre, and even though it was the weakest in terms of overall processing power, it still excelled the most.

You truly know nothing of game design or programming so you have no right to be spewing the bullshit you are vomiting in this topic now.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

@ pimpdaddy when can we get results like KZ2 on the 360 since it's so "easy" to develop for?
Written by PimpDaddy on 2009/03/02

While you deepthroat everything Sonys Pr feeds you the rest of us just laugh. Kaz Hirai is an idiot. While trying to boast about the PS3's supposed power advantage over the 360, he managed to sound like a fucking moron.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

@ Xenos you don't need to be an expert at game design to know KZ2 is in a League of it's own in the console space as far as tech goes. it's unmatched at the moment.

Since you are obviously more knowledgeable about game engines/ tech then I am, I would love if you got a hands on with the game for about an hour or two so I could here your impressions. multiplayer and single player
Written by PimpDaddy on 2009/03/02

I dont know Sky. Since it took 2 years for Sony to release a game that looked better than either Gears of War game. And those games were being done on the outdated Unreal 3.0 engine. Here is a better question. How much money would Guerrila Games have saved Microsoft if they had made Killzone2 on the 360? How much time could have been saved. Could this have been done a year ago?

I am sorry but I expect both consoles to release games in the near future to surpass Killzone2. Yawns...
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

^^^ last paragraph was to Xenos

@ Pimp

Well when you find out how long it will take Pimpdaddy you let me know first. after all the console is "easy" to developer for and its been out longer so it should be really soon right?

@ pimpdaddy

How much would they have saved? Don't know. The question is would it even be the same game? And the answer to that is no. Sometimes you have to pay a Premium price to get a Premium product. Just look at the PS3. then look at the KZ2 budget. quality cost money. if you buy something cheap you might end out screwed out of your money( you and your RROD). your a master at that so you should know all about investing in a quality.
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

"@ pimpdaddy when can we get results like KZ2 on the 360 since it's so "easy" to develop for?"

NOTHING in game development is "easy". Just to imply such things only proves how much you don't know. When it takes you roughly 5x the amount of time and man hours to produce the same results on the ps3 as you would on the 360, that is NOT appealing to the development community.

The tech is not unmatched at the moment, perception and fanboy mentality will cause some idiots to think this.

No company would be willing to pour 4+ years and $60 million in one title without any need to do so. Sony had something to prove because they dug themselves in a hole, the rest of the game industry doesn't have anything to prove.

Such an ignorant fucking idiot
Written by PimpDaddy on 2009/03/02

Like I said the budget for Killzone2 was set at 60 million last time I read. They were able to focus exclusively on one console. Plus the game was in development for at least 4 years.

I have no idea what Microsoft has up thier sleeves. But I do know that they wont just lay down for this. The PS3 has "1" game. Just "1" that you can brag about and you cream your shorts in every thread. While ignoring that KZ2 is marginally better than a game done on the 360 in half the time using a middleware outdated engine. You still want to brag about that?
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

There are so many factors in how a game looks and runs that it's not something that is easily discussed. These factors are things that Sky obviously doesn't consider since he doesn't know what he's talking about.

No matter what he'll think what he wants, so let him live in his little world.

Pimp has the right idea.....
Written by PimpDaddy on 2009/03/02

LOL here comes Sy's bitchboy fanboy rant. RROD. Good one. Thats all the SDF can use when theya re backed into a corner. I thought you were a 360 owner Sky. Guess it is true. You dont own a 360. Faggot ass liar. Your as fake as those CGI demos from E3 2005. See what I did there?
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

"The question is would it even be the same game? And the answer to that is no."

Apparently Sky is also a multi-platform developer and understands both platforms. Such a stupid comment, you can say this about ALL exclusive games to a degree.

Sky has no proof of the BS he's spewing. It doesn't matter what we say, like I said before, he'll think what he wants. His mind is already made up so his questions are nothing but bullshit in order to try and trick others as if he can actually look at things objectively.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

@ pimp

No i don't know what you did there. I posted plenty of pics of my 360 and will do it again if you like. I can let you see how dusty it is

@ Xenos

Yes Sony did have something to prove after that E3 05 demo. As I look around and read the only people have Don't give GG there credit for leading in GFX in the console space are those have having no playing time with the retail product

The difference between Me and Pimpdaddy/Xenos is I actually try a product extensively and in most cases purchase the title before I bash it. these guys rely on videos/other peoples impressions to form there own opinion

Thats a Core fundamental difference between US
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

And that's why you bashed Ninja Blade right? You had extensive time playing that game right?

No the difference between us is that you let a company think for you while I make up my own mind using facts and logic.

Sky, everything you post is a joke, everyone sees you as a joke, and the biggest joke of all is that you think we should take you serious.

I give GG the credit they are due, the KZ2 is an impressive piece of tech, but I don't vault it up to the heavens like you do. It's good tech that works around the limitations of the PS3, but it's also limited in many ways. I would never expect to see a racing game running on the KZ2 engine for example.

Again there are MANY factors when looking at an engine that you are purposely ignoring fanboy.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

How is the KZ2 tech limited? isn't every engine on consoles "limited"?
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

Why do you care? Doesn't matter what I say, you'll twist or spin it around to support your agenda.

what it is really saying is we designed the ps3 very badely so this is our excuse. lol
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

You make it seem likes It's a con because the engine is limited to FPS.. by the logic the Forza and GT5 engines aren't as impressive because they are only for racing sims

The Limits of an engine as far as what genre's it can be implemented in should not be a Con on the engine itself. it's part of its design and has a specific purpose
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

@ Nemesis, I wouldn't say it was designed badly, but some better decisions could have been made, though this could also be said for all 3 platforms.

However when you have developers saying this:

"Sony let their hardware be designed by a comity of business interests rather than a well thought out design that would serve the game development community."

And even Sony fanboy supporter David Jaffe saying he would have not put a blu-ray drive in the ps3, it's clear that game development wasn't their #1 focus with the ps3.

@ Sky, no point in discussing ANYTHING with you. You make claims without backing them up, you ignore comments that don't support your agenda, and you act as if you actually know WTF you're talking about. It's a joke, give up.

You say that the genre an engine is designed for shouldn't be seen as a con, but you insist on comparing a limited genre engine to an engine that supports anything from racing, RPG, fighting, FPS, TPS, etc.

There is NO LOGIC to how you think, it's all governed and controlled by Sony thus making any discussion with you pointless.

Don't you ever wonder why you have half the site telling you to go fuck yourself or shut up?

Oh yeah, I'll ask again and keep on asking until you quit ignoring it and answer Sky. You've played all of Ninja Blade right? That's why you can call it trash.................right?

Small dick fanboy needs to make himself feel better.

Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

I knew you were, I'm just playin off of it because I know the truth hurts Sky. ;^)
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

Sony leads the way with there engines across the board taking one Genre at a time. first it was the racing with GT5 P now its FPS with KZ2. whats next?

Also.. lets be real with each other.. are you implying I have a small penis? because if you honestly believe that I wouldn't mind proving you wrong once again! I am willing to leave this forum today if you think your dick is bigger then mines. we can settle that today

lol I'm sure you don't wanna put your money where your mouth is so I suggest you refrain from bringing up genitals. unless of course you want a wake up call

Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

Yes, Sony leads the way, that's why we may see 3 Forza games from GT4 to GT5. That's also why GT hasn't moved beyond precalculated physics and bumper car action.

Give me a break.

Also, you guys read it here first, Sky wants to show us his small penis. I knew the guy was sick.

Poor Sky, when you can't accept the merits of some's post, you ignore it and just suck on Sony's balls some more.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

@ Xenos

Yes of course Sony leads the way. 1 GT can outsell 3 forza titles so what difference does that make?

and GT is moving beyond and will continue to set a standard.. News is coming soon on GT5 a very respected person from GT universe forums by the name of amar hinted at a GT5 bombshell thats coming soon.. same guy who leaked the F1 ferrari that came to GT5p.. take it with a grain of salt for now.. but just remember that the next thing you hear about this particular title your jaw may drop

h ttp://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=114526

He is pretty respectable so take it for whats its worth

"Something so big is cooking, you can't even imagine the size of it.

And there is something else cooking, which you can't even imagine the price of it.

And the third thing is also in the oven, but you can't even imagine it's even baking. And besides that third thing there is something else in the oven, I'd say it's the oven itself.

And I guess everything will be presented in the gala dinner in the weeks or months to come, but at the E3 latest.

And then you'll find out that day of the Fiest is also known even today.

And yes, my NDA is killing me so much that I can't even tell you how much you should be hungry. But I can assure you it will be the Fiest of the Gods."
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

What does sales have to do with leading in tech? Oh I know, you're twisting it all around so you can advertise something sony related.

My jaw will drop when GT becomes a real sim.

I'm done feeding the troll now, good job shitting up another topic sky.

Fuckin loser.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

Hey Xenos have you ever played GT5p?

And you do know A sim is based on the driving trying to replicate the true experience of being in that car.. let me guess your of those guys who want crash damage and custom paint on a flight simulator too huh?

your logic fails
Written by incoming00 on 2009/03/02

anyone got any butter for my popcorn? these are always fun to read :p
Written by Xenos on 2009/03/02

Pass that popcorn my way, this dumb shit actually thinks flight sims don't have damage, this is getting good.
Written by Sky on 2009/03/02

@ incoming00

Actually Xenos deserves the burnt popcorn at the bottom of the bag. Just feed him the scraps. Hell, thats what trolls eat... leftovers.. he will be thankful and gracious for whatever you feed him. just look what games MS feeds um.. any little exclusive he gets even if it's trash he will say whatever it takes to make it prominent and go out his way to bash the opposition. He is a Trained Troll.
