Timeshift

One of the main gripes I have with the game is the lack of weapon diversity. There is one sub machine gun, and to be frank, you will find yourself using that weapon near 100% of the time. There are other weapons to be found, but the ammo is scarce, and they just are not practical when you take the map layout into account. Then again, sometimes the weapons are just too powerful, for example there is the Thunderbolt. This weapon is a crossbow that fires sticky bombs. One shot will kill almost any enemy you stick it to, and guess what, it has a zoom sight! Any experienced player can use this weapon, along with the time manipulation features, to clear out any group of enemies without a problem.

Of course, as with any game that has a gimmick like time manipulation, there will be puzzles to solve that must be solved using said gimmick. Timeshift, again, is no exception to the rule. The tasks start out clever, but once you have solved two or three puzzles, you realize that they all follow the same basic set of rules, be it rewind time to get through, or stop time to scoot through a hole. Really though, these “puzzles” barely can be called puzzles, they are more like map obstacles that must be overcome to proceed. Freezing time to get past a jet of fire or an electrified pool of water gets old after the fifth time you have done it.

As I mentioned earlier, the story in Timeshift is lacking. Severely. Even when you finish the game’s single player mode, you will not be privy to much more information on the character you have been playing for the last 8 hours or so then you had when you started. The plot is more or less straightforward, but there is no explanation given as to why your timesuit jumps you to certain locations and times, other than calling it a “suit malfunction.” To be honest, Timeshift represents a very rare occurrence in video games. The developers, it seems, worked very hard to make the basic gameplay mechanics competitive with the top FPS games of this great era of gaming. Unfortunately, it is as if they then stopped short on all the other aspects of the game – story, weapons, and graphics.

Speaking of the game’s graphics, there are some truly great-looking moments. When the weather turns nasty especially, the rain effect in the game is one of the best I’ve ever seen. There are some minor clipping problems, but the real graphical issue is the frame rate lag. When the battles get hot and heavy, the game tends to chug a bit. This can certainly affect game play, and when you have graphical lag plus slowdown due to time manipulation it gets especially hairy.
