The multiplayer mode in Timeshift is actually one of the better aspects of the game. Since the story does not need to be relied upon, that already takes out one of the major gripes. The standard deathmatch, team dm, capture the flag and other modes are included, but where the game really shines online is in the multiplayer arena combat mode. The Timeshift abilities are available online, but not in the same way they are implemented in single player. There are “chrono grenades” in the multiplayer mode which are basically explosive devices that emit a shockwave of altered time. Anything within the blast radius will move at a fraction of its normal rate, and this mean anything – people, bullets, debris, other grenades, etc. This is a very smart way to incorporate the time mechanics online, and also is one of the coolest offense multiplayer weapons I have ever seen. One thing that is worth noting about online play is that the weapons have been balanced differently. This is certainly a welcome change, since, as I said, the single player weapon balance was skewed. You can grab any weapon that you like and not worry so much about being caught with your pants down – especially if you have a few chrono grenades left. Did I mention how cool the chrono grenades were? Timeshift has come a very long way since we first got a glimpse of a run-of-the-mill, standard FPS game, over a year ago. The developers have worked very hard to bring the gameplay mechanics up to date, and set them on par with the recent stellar FPS games that have been flowing like water as of late. It is a shame that they did not take the time to bring the other parts of the game up to snuff before sending it out, it really had the potential to be right up there with the Orange Box and Call of Duty 4. With those games available now, though, and another installment of the “king” of sci-fi FPS games on the way (Unreal Tournament), Timeshift will fall by the wayside. |
