The world map is based from a central location, the badlands, through which you can access all the parts of Kameo’s world that you need to visit to complete your quest. The sheer amount of enemies in the badlands as you travel from place to place will never cease to amaze you no matter how many times you see it. There are literally thousands, all doing their own thing. Not only that, but there are also good forces fighting on your side that clash with the troll enemies all in real time. Pretty impressive. The gameplay itself is pretty simple. The only challenging part is figuring out which elemental you need to use to progress, and if after a while you fail to discover the solution, you can always hit pause and talk to the “wotnot” book, your magical talking guide. The game is set in third person view, and the buttons on the control pad are used to switch elemental form. And that’s it. Before you ask, no you cannot set the controls to anything else. It takes some getting used to for sure. Let’s talk about some of the lesser points of the game. First of all, there is the soundtrack. Now, the music itself is fantastic, a fully orchestrated score that is on par with any motion picture. The quality was not the problem -- the volume was. The score plays so low that at times you have to stand your character still away from any environment noise just to hear it. There is no setting you can use to turn the BGM volume up. What is the point of having a top notch soundtrack if no one can hear it? Another problem with this game is round things. There are points in the game where you have to use your character to push round rocks, trolls, and items off cliffs, into lava, or next to blockades as bombs. This is quite possibly one of the most annoying things you will ever have to do in any video game. The round items roll off to the left and right of you, and if you are lucky you can complete the task in less than 5 tries. There are also many times where you simply will have to stumble on to the next step in your journey. I cannot tell you how many times I had to jump to my doom just to see an ice patch that Chilla could climb. As you progress through the game there are certain side quests you can complete to gain magical fruit to power up your character’s special attacks. The only power ups necessary to complete this game with a minimum of annoyance are Thermite’s upgrades. I strongly suggest you save any of the magic fruit you collect to upgrade all of this final elemental’s powers. You also can collect coins to buy items at various shops you will encounter, but to be honest, it is so unnecessary that unless you want another skin for your character or a bigger wallet to carry more useless coins, you will likely just pass the shops by. |
